Tricky question: First time I change the name of an item I would like to save the old name to the item’s Finder comments.
How could I approach this? Can I use a Smart Rule?
The On Renaming event is actually triggered after renaming, therefore not suitable. How do you rename the item? On your own or automatically?

One idea might be to immediately copy the name to the comment, e.g. after importing, via a smart rule.
