Hi, is there a way to see the file path for an item in search results without having to click on the info button? Ideally I’d like to see the file path appear automatically, maybe underneath the file or folder’s name in the search results. Thanks for any advice.
You can customize the columns displayed in the search pane, just like the normal item list. When you have the search pane open, go to View > List Columns in the menu (or right click one of the column headers). Third option from the top is Path
.
But file paths can get long, so it might be truncated depending on your setup. You can instead open the Info > Generic inspector. It shows the same information as the Info popover, but it stays open.
I’m curious why this would be important for you to see in the search results? It doesn’t matter much in how I use DEVONthink. The database path shown under the item name is enough for me.
Troej, I use this (path column) sometimes when I am looking at duplicates, replicants - it is then easy to sort by name, then sort by path. Of course it’s just one of the ways Devonthink lets you do it, but it is handy.
But how is the path relevant for imported items? And what does sorting by path with replicates or duplicates really tell you?
Because it makes it easier for me to see what groups they’re in, even with truncation. So I may decide to batch remove the replicants from group x, because I see they are also in group Y. It is a bot of an antidote for my replication-mania
Afaik, the path of an item is its location on disk. Unless you’re indexing items (which you didn’t say), groups in DT have no counterpart in the file system – they’re just containers that organize things.
Perhaps we’re talking about different things here, or you’re using indexed folders.
guess you’re right - I was talking about locations rather than paths.
I can’t see paths as an option in search results, only locations, for indexed files. Not sure what troejgaard was referring to - maybe you know.
?
Those are indexed from iCloud, btw.
I don’t get what you’re talking about with locations. I can’t enable the Location
column in the search pane – I guess because it’s already displayed under the item name. Makes sense to me.
It all depends on context. For example, if you have a smart group listing all replicants, you can turn on the “Location” column.
Yep, that was my use case
Thank you!
