Hi,
I can’t figure out how to create a smart group that does the following:
Search in database
(All matches “abc” OR
All matches “def”) AND
Item is not part of or descendant of group X
It’s the last condition I can’t define — there is not “group” condition in the conditions list and “tag” doesn’t work.
Thanks.

There is no group or Location criterion.
In the Info: Generic inspector, you could set Exclude from Search on the group you don’t want results from.
You could also tag the group, setting File > Database Properties to Inherit Tags of Groups , then set a criterion of Tag is not …
The latter would also not inhibit other searches from the toolbar search field.
OK, thanks for the tip. IMHO it would be a good feature to add, because “Exclude from search” is a database-wide setting which is very useful, but sometimes you need to exclude some groups from a Smart Group and using tags for this feels like somewhat of a hack.
We’ll consider this for future releases.

+1 from me, I was trying to do the same thing (excluding one group for a specific search) and came here since I couldn’t figure it out.

+1 for me too (but I do appreciate the ability to quickly turn off search in a group)
