Standard View Oddity with RTF and Word Files Only

I’m in DT4 but I don’t believe that’s my issue. Instead this appears to be either a setting gone wrong, or a configuration file is on the fritz. Up until today, when viewing any documents in Standard View, the full window was utilized, basically it auto-filled to Full Width no matter what type of document I was viewing.

This morning my RTF, Word and PDF files now appear zoomed out to the equivalent of Full Page View, screenshots below, with lot’s of open real estate on either side. If I click the Full Width button on the toolbar, it only beeps for RTF and Word files and the view doesn’t change, but it does expand for PDFs (3rd screenshot below), though when selecting the next PDF it doesn’t remember and I have to utilize the Full Width button each time. Excel and PowerPoint files open as they have previously to the full width with no input needed.

I’ve rebooted DT4 twice, I’ve rebooted my MBP twice, verified and repaired the 3 databases currently open at least 3 times each, but the behavior persist across each database, whether I have 1, 2 or 3 open simultaneously. The only way to have RTFs and Word documents expand as they used to, is to go into Setting and Uncheck the “Wrap Text” box, with the obvious effect of and the text in the document on one long continuous line to the right, not ideal.

The MBP is a 2019 16" Intel Mac with 16GB of memory running a fresh install of Sonoma 14.7.4 from a week ago when I got fed-up with Sequioa. The expected behavior for the Standard View worked fine since the refresh up until this morning. Have I messed up a setting, not that I’ve made many changes other than verifying my preferences were checked when migrating to DT4 on Friday, or could it be something else?

Welcome @steve64_64

The display of PDFs is governed by Files > Multimedia > PDF Display and is discussed in the Settings > Files > Multimedia section of the Help…

The margin of other text-based formats is controlled by the Editing > Format > Margins settings, also discussed in the Help.

Thanks Jim, the Max Line Width was the setting I’d changed under the Margins and didn’t realize the implications. I don’t recall unchecking the Automatically Resize box but apparently it was either me or the kitten walking over my keyboard last evening lol

Thanks again for the quick response and the location in the manual, I’d skipped right past those

You’re welcome!
And speaking personally, I find myself making periodic changes to the margins and line width, but that’s likely just me futzing about

I was just looking this up as well, and found a couple “bugs” in the Help documents regarding Settings > Editing > Format (online, PDF: pages 213-14):

  • The text under Plain Text says “There are also two settings for controlling the width of the content:”, yet goes on to describe the four sliders.
  • The Max Line Width and Margin settings are described under Plain Text, yet they apply to Rich Text as well.

Thanks. I’ll fix it for a future release.
