`DEVONthink Pro formatting will show it as`

([)hello(])

I wonder why.

It is indeed curious, but what is it supposed to do? Is it math related?

iA Writer and Marked 2 also preview the text as ([)hello(]), while Ulysses and Byword preview the text as ($$)hello($$).

Gruber’s [Dingus](http://daringfireball.net/projects/markdown/dingus) (why does that sound wrong? 😮 ) also renders it as ($$)hello($$).
