Suggestion for backup using DropBox or External Device in a poor Mac system?

Hi,

I’ve been worked very hard in DevonThink. I tested a lot of resources and nowadays I found the following problem: limited space in my Mac.

I found this problem in the past, so I decided to work priority with texts (without images). Another decision was to save everything in a external pen drive. It works until now.

BUT …

Things change. Now, I priorize to use markdown files and I also would like to improve my database with PDFs and Images.

I read some comments in this forum about use a Dropbox Sync, and I’m not sure if it works or not in my case, just before I do not have a lot of space for that.

So, I would like to know some opinions about that:

  1. Start to use DropBox Sync (remember I do not have much space)

  2. Continuous to work using an external device (in my case pen drives)

  3. Use local directory to store databases.

Follow information about y actual system. I’m looking forward to your suggestions.

It is not advisable to store the databases on a flash/thumb/pen drive. They are not built for sustained I/O and are not as reliable as proper external hard drives. A portable external disk would be a better option if you need to conserve space

Yes, you can use Dropbox as a sync location but note it’s not a backup, neither advertised nor advocated as such. We strongly advocate proper primary backups using TimeMachine (or similar snapshot-style backup applications) and external drives. Also, you should read the recent series of articles we posted: https://www.devontechnologies.com/search?q=backups&from=blog

Syncing is for keeping the same databases on multiple devices.
