Support Assistant not available

I’m evaluating DEVONthink and I notice that the Support Assistant button isn’t available. I tried optimizing and rebuilding the database, but that doesn’t help. I probably changed a setting I shouldn’t have while exploring the app, but can’t figure out which one. Does anyone have suggestions of how I can fix this?

Is there not an option under the “Help” menu?

Yikes - I made a mistake in my initial post. I’m looking for “Search Assistant,” not “Support Assistant.” My mistake, sorry. Support Assistant works fine for me & is very helpful.

What isn’t working: In the “Take Control of DEVONthink 4” user guide, I see that I should be able to click on “the tiny AI button” to use the native AI search feature, but it is grey for me. That’s what I really need help fixing.

From the guide:

Which edition do you use? In case of DEVONthink Pro or Server - which model is selected in Settings > AI > Chat?

I’m using the version of DEVONthink you get when you click on “download” from the main Apps page: DEVONtechnologies | DEVONthink, professional document and information manager for Mac and iOS.. Version 4.0.2, downloaded yesterday.

Under AI/Chat, I believe I have the default settings - I haven’t connected AIs yet. However, I was under the impression that the native AI functionality in “Search Assistant” wouldn’t need an additional AI connection. Is that incorrect?

This requires indeed external generative AI.

Got it. I read “New in DEVONthink 4 Pro and Server is an AI search feature” in the guide mentioned above to = there is some level of native AI in the app. My chat with Gemini and Claude comparing tools earlier this week also gave me the same impression.

However, I am learning that is not the case. Understood. This is why the 30 day trial period is important. I’m still quite pleased with the other functionality and features of DEVONthink, as well as your quick replies in this forum. Thanks!

Indeed and there been for 23+ years. DEVONthink has long had its own proprietary artificial intelligence built in. That’s different than the access to external AI in version 4.

Attacked again by the generic use of “AI.” Using the same word to describe external genAI tools and DT’s built-in tools is almost guaranteed to cause this kind of confusion.

My apologies. I meant no offense, and certainly was not attacking anyone or the product. I was simply trying to keep my message brief. I truly am excited about everything DEVONthink will help me accomplish and am thrilled with the product. I just wanted to know why my little “AI” button was grey, and I got my answer. Case closed. Thanks again.
