Swipe down vs sync button

Hello,

This might be nothing, but are there differences in DEVONthink To Go between swiping down to refresh and using [sync] via the three dots in the top-right? I’ve swiped down to sync RSS feeds without the desired result, whereas the sync option worked as expected.

Thanks in advance,
Pontus

My hunch is they both do the same thing—request DEVONthink ToGo, iOS, and the devices/servers/networks in the sync to do a sync. Others can comment if this incorrect.

But from Help:

How quickly will it sync?: There is no definitive answer here as there is a lot of variability in the situation. For example, if a remote server isn’t responding in a timely fashion, transmitting your sync data is slower. Also, DEVONthink To Go’s sync does not run constantly. On the automatic schedule, a sync will start up to 45 seconds after a change is saved in a database and every 4.5 minutes of idle time. And while DEVONthink To Go supports background app refresh, that is a process controlled by the operating system. It allows certain apps to run periodically for a very short time before the process is terminated.

I looked in the Help for mention of the two ways to initiate a sync and I didn’t notice anything about this question you have.

What did you expect? Were both situations comparable for your test?

Yeah, you see. As expected, then, but my experience so far has been better results with the dedicated sync button. Could just be that I happened to hit it right after a sync had run.

What were the expected results? This morning I went through my RSS feeds on my Mac mini. An hour later I checked the same feeds on the phone and everything from yesterday was still there - none of the changes I’d made an hour earlier (deleting, moving items to other databases, etc.) were synced.

I swiped down several times with no change, but the moment I tapped the sync button the feeds updated.

Might well be coincidence, of course, I’ll keep an eye on it.

Thanks for your time, @rmschne

Interesting.

Pulling down syncs that very database and triggers the same operation as long-tapping a database and choosing Sync from the context menu. Which sync button do you tap?

Got it. What happens, then, when you pull down in the first screen—the one that shows all databases, smart groups, etc.?
That’s what I did: wasn’t inside a specific database.

When I got the sync to work instantly, I used the three-dot menu in the upper-right and chose [Sync]. I assume that’s the context menu.
Now I also see you can sync a particular database by long-pressing it.
Thanks @eboehnisch

On the database screen, pulling down initiates a sync of all databases, one after the other, similar to the three-dots menu and choosing Sync.

Thanks for the explanation
