Sync. Old version DevonThink with Catalina vs latest version DevonThink with Sonoma

Is there any conflict with sync with two Macbooks?

old Macbook with Catalina with DevonThink(396)
new MacBook with Sonoma and DevonThin(397)

and iPhone iOS 16

Edit: It looks like it does conflict. If I create a folder/file on DevonThink 397 with Sonoma it doesn’t sync to the other devices (old MacBook/Catalina and iPhone )

How do I fix this?

What method do you use to sync? For whatever method you use, did you follow the instructions exactly?

I’m using old iCloud sync. Both old devices with DevonThink 396 and iPhone iOS 16 work fine, they sync. if I create anything on the old devices they sync to the new MacBook but not the other way around

Anything logged to Window > Log? Do you use the same iCloud sync locations (either Legacy or CloudKit) on all devices and the same encryption keys?

Nothing on Window>log

All 3 devices the same location. iCloud (Cloudkit)

All devices sync with each other EXCEPT when creating/modifying anything on the new Mac it DOESNT sync to the other 2 devices.

If its in the wrong location or different encryption key, the new Mac WONT sync anything at all.

I “Verify And Repaired” and “Check file Integrity” on each database and still didn’t help

I followed the instructions on “how to transfer your databases to a new Mac” on tutorials. This process NEVER asked me to input encryption key. could his be the issue?

Setting up a sync location isn’t going to “ask you” to enter an encryption key. That’s up to you to know and enter in the sync location’s settings.

Let me try this but I think I might have forgotten the encryption key. Is there anyway to get it, somewhere?

No. By design, encryption keys are not recoverable. I keep a copy in my files.

At this point, probably best if you “clean” the sync locations and start again, following the detailed instructions exactly. And consider if you really need an internet sync service vs. using Bonjour which is quicker and more reliable than Apple’s cloud services (based on reports here).

it looks like it auto inputs the encryption key as this is low it looked before I input it again.

So what I can do now?

My hunch is you have some sort of background process, e.g. 1Password, macOS Keychain or something [impossible to tell from here] re-entering the encryption key or something. This is not happening due to anything DEVONthink does.

I suggest just deleting what was put in automatically by something other than DEVONthink, and type in what you want to use as an encryption key. And this time please remember to record it somewhere.

PS, it looks like from the screen shot you have Bonjour “incoming connections” enabled. If using Bonjour, why also using the more unreliable Apple CloudKit? Doing this deliberately for some reason?

what’s another less intense action like “clean location”? or would that a be the last resort?

From other posts:
deleting the current sync settings?how does someone delete the “sync settings”?

This would be used in more extreme troubleshooting.

thank you. Bonjour is not enabled.

Also there is no app that can actually auto input passwords to DevonThink. 1pswd and keychain only work for safari

Deleting the sync location would not remedy this issue.
Cleaning the sync location isn’t a last resort, nor is it the first.

DEVONthink doesn’t auto-insert anything for the encryption key. It remembers what you entered.

You’re jumping all over the place in more than one forum thread which isn’t useful in addressing the issue. In DEVONthink on the problematic Mac, hold the Option key and choose Help > Report bug to start a support ticket.

what’s the first things I should do first? lets start there,

I don’t like opening tickets, you guys see a lot of info there that shouldn’t be included and shared. I said this because I did this before and I didn’t like what info you guys are able to see

Read and follow the advice in the “DEVONthink Manual” and in the app’s Help, Troubleshooting chapter, “Sync Issues” section. No need to repeat all that here, again.

And also reconsider if you really need internet syncing. You might. Just have a good reason, IMHO.
