Text Expander support

One reason I use Mac keyboard text replacement - it is available on all apple devices with no need to mess about with keyboards. It doesn’t have auto fields like date, but I put place holders like !D in my text which I can use find and replace on to quickly set.

I found I didn’t use all the bells and whistles of Textexpander and I try and avoid monthly fees. Keyboard Maestro and Alfred only work on MacOS. I didin’t want to use different approaches on different platforms. When I analysed my needs, I found text replacement was good enough.

I use TextExpander, because it works on iOS as well which is great. However I agree, TextExpander is pretty cumbersome to use with external keyboards:

  1. Bring up the onscreen keyboard
  2. Switch to the TextExpander keyboard
  3. Type your abbreviation
  4. Close the onscreen keyboard

I wasn’t aware of Snippety and Rocket – will give them a try when my subscription comes to a renewal.

I use Espanso on desktop with a Raycast extension.

Recently got a Rocket Typist for $1 on Bundlehunt, but you have to buy a separate iOS license to be able to sync.

Welcome @Skoro

Expanso is interesting for sure, but it’s a bit more technical to set up and administer.

Yes, it may seem so at the beginning, to be honest I felt the same about DEVONthink at first

It’s pretty easy to open a text file (I like to use CotEditor) and edit matches like so:

Before:

  • trigger: “;bld”
    replace: ‘Build 0.1.227.50231’

After:

  • trigger: “;bld”
    replace: ‘Build 0.1.229.50239’

Indeed, but we do have a wide range of customers with a varying range of technical savvy or inclination. Perhaps your example may spur someone to try it for themselves.

PS: I too am a fan of CotEditor.
