For some reason I’m not able to edit MD files once they are created.
If I go to Data -> New -> Markdown Text and create a new MD file I can enter and edit text. But once I leave that file (for example by switching to another file in DT) and then come back to the very same MD file, I’m no longer able to edit it. I have to open it in a 3rd part app (BBEdit in my case) to edit it.
Is this by design or I’m missing something here?
By default you’re probably seeing the preview of the Markdown document, you have to switch to the alternate view (see View menu) or change the prefs (see Preferences > Media) to edit the document.

Try the shortcut ⌘⌥p which switches to edit mode. Theres also a script that can be downloaded from Devonthink that can open two windows at once with one window in edit mode and the other in preview mode (this is in the menus listed as view -> best alternative or view -> text alternative.
