Just noting the logical rationale behind the conversion, not necessarily explaining the mechanism.
Yes, if you mean that I don’t have “Optimized Storage” turned on or anything. All the files are stored locally, although it sometimes takes a moment to sync changes from the laptop to the desktop, etc. I’m always indexing locally stored files.
Noted. Thanks.
It’s starting to look like it’s not a DEVONthink issue after all! I shut down DT, and the same thing happens in iCloud-syncing files. But not on files that do not sync, or that sync with OneDrive. The same is true on my MacBookPro.
I apologize for the false alarm - it seems to be an iCloud issue. And a very strange one.
No worries!
And please double-check tag persistence between Macs with OneDrive files. Last I knew tags were stripped by OneDrive so they weren’t present on the receiving Mac.
Actually DEVONthink supports only nested tags using slashs, e.g. tag1/tag2
.
So, maybe it is a DT issue? To repeat: I’m trying to AVOID nested tagging. I want to have “flat” tags where different parts of searchable separately. In Finder, searching for “bar” returns “foo:bar” but not “foobar”. From the screenshot below, it appears that DT supports this syntax. But somewhere, :
is getting converted to /
and that triggers (unwanted) nesting in DT.
DEVONthink definitely doesn’t. Otherwise this would be be always the case and not just when using Finder tags of indexed iCloud Drive files.
I’ve moved this thread to the MPU discourse site, where people are claiming that Apple doesn’t want you to have more than 7 Finder tags. ???
There are only 7 color labels allowed but there is no admonition to have only 7 tags (even if labels function as tags in macOS).
That being said, thousands of tags aren’t a good idea, and not just from a practical standpoint. See…
Thanks, Jim. I currently have 624 distinct tags, which is a lot, but not crazy. My current hypothesis is that the key problem is that I’ve applied each of the color “Favorite” label to many different tags. (e.g. 40 tags that are all also green). I’m going to strip the colors and see how it goes. Thanks for your help!
You’re welcome!

I don’t know if I’m late to the party but if you haven’t made the change yet, can you post a screen capture of what you’re referring to?
You can see it in my first screenshot: several tags that are all green. Think it’s a problem?
By the way, I’ve decided to use the Terminal command to “disable finder tags” for DEVONthink. Im thinking that I’ll keep the two systems separate until I’ve got things sorted out. But now I’m wondering if I can ever integrate them again. What happens if I reset DisableFinderTags to “false”?
