Using sorter to drag drop email

This feels like a really stupid issue, but dragging and dropping individual emails into the sorter is not working.

In that I drag it into the Inbox in the Sorter, then pull up DT and the just dropped email is not in the Inbox. And there are no rules operating that would move it anywhere else. I also did a DB search for the sender’s name and the subject title. Crickets. Is there a setting that I need to toggle to allow that functionality?

What version of DEVONthink?

4 beta

  • Is 3 still installed / running?
  • Is there a crossed-pencil icon next the Global Inbox in DEVONthink?

No. DT 3 is zipped and out of the way as instructed in the upgrade manual. No crossed pencil icon.

Is DEVONthink 4 allowed to automate Apple Mail, see System Settings > Privacy & Security?

Yes.

I just tried this successfully on macOS 15.4. Which macOS version do you use?

15.3.2

Time to upgrade I guess.

Before updating - does DEVONthink 4 have full disk access?

I thought it did, but it doesn’t show up in the list. So I added it manually and will see how that goes. Thank you.

That didn’t work.

I’ll update OSX and report back.

Update.

I updated OSX to 15.4, and it still wouldn’t work.

Then I tried other emails, wondering if there was something about this one source that DT didn’t like. They got through. But I still could not get the one source through. It would make the little plinking sound, close the sorter, and I would then go check. Nothing.

I had the sorter on the right side of the screen, and was getting sick of dragging with the trackpad across the laptop screen, so I moved the sorter to the left side so it would be closer to my email inbox.

Tried it again…And voila. It worked and copied the full email to the inbox in the Sorter. But only for one email at a time. If I select several emails and drag/drop to the sorter, it may copy one, but generally the pattern is that it doesn’t copy any. I have to do them one at a time.

Maybe, since it worked on your machine earlier today, you might want to try a bulk import via Sorter?

The other emails I tried were also one-at-a-time. Maybe it’s an issue with bulk importing via Sorter? I’ll keep trying different scenarios and see if I can identify more useful patterns.

Needless to say, that makes no sense to me. I report the whole tale hoping that maybe it might mean something to you or your devs.

Further update 250407.2222

It seems that it doesn’t like the bulk copy function. I tried it with a couple other email sources, and no go. It will transfer one at a time, but any more than that and it chokes.

(And, of course, that may be by design. Though I don’t know what that would be set up like that. Other documents from Finder folders, etc., seem no to have issues with bulk importing through the Sorter.)

I just dropped 3 emails onto the Sorter and they were successfully imported to the Sorter. Do you drag the emails from a local mailbox, an email account or a smart mailbox in Apple Mail?

Local. From Apple Mail or Outlook client. Not from a smart mailbox.

Experimenting more. Getting mixed results. But I seem to be zeroing in on the issues.

It WILL bulk import from Apple Mail (selected several emails for drag and drop). All seemed to make the journey.

But it seems to only copy one at a time from Outlook.

I have not yet tried to bulk import from Outlook online. Can’t do that right now as I have to head to a meeting.

Are you using the New Outlook?

Ding ding ding. We may have a winner.

I switched to Legacy and bulk imported and all 5 arrived in the DT4 inbox successfully.

I will play with it more when I’m out of my meeting.

It is well known Microsoft broke inter-application communication with their New Outlook. The Legacy UI still supports it.

Didn’t know that. I only recently started using Outlook in a new work setting. I don’t generally pay much attention to what happens in Redmond.

Thanks for sticking in with me to chase down the issue.
