Which version do I need DT4 or server

I have a MacBook Pro m5 and a Mac mini m2 additionally an iPad and iPhone. I need my data everywhere synced. This would be the pro version.

But, my wife assists me with my work and needs also access to certain data files!

I am not in the office very often so I guess the Mac mini m2 would be the Server ein then ? So my wife can access over browser some data??? Correct?

I work in the real rate business and also work as a court pointed expert for real estate and sales/ brokerage of real estate.

So I need data quick on the court room over handy ( dt4 ToGo).

Should I clone the data base to my m5 Mac or just sync it?

What version do we need me ( Mac mini server and a MacBook plus iPad and iPhone) and my wife Mac desktop maybe also iPhone. ???

Thank you :folded_hands::man_bowing:

Also what would be the best setup and setting for this needs

I need my data everywhere synced. This would be the pro version.

All editions of DEVONthink sync.

Yes, that’s feasible.

Should I clone the data base to my m5 Mac or just sync it?

That depends on what you’re doing on it.

If your wife is going to use the web interface, you’d logically need the Server edition.

And the main database will be on the Mac mini which is not my main computer. It that wrong? So on my main Mac book computer m5 I will have the full desktop version and not the wenn version right? Or do I need an additional pro version then. No I guess the server edition is a pro edition with server functionality as I understood??

Will there be a speed thing cause I content over network to the m2 ?

Having the main database on my MacBook which I have with me would be a problem for the wife not reading the data, right?

There is the problem I don’t understand how to set it up good or do I just misunderstand the versions. If I work from a ( server edition which would be a pro version for my main computer m5 , not the m2 Mac mini) , we both work with Diener data. My wife and me. How do the data find together then?

I only think of the server edition because my wife needs data. I would be perfekt with the pro on the MacBook m5. The Mac mini we just bring in for her? It is the a better solution to this

DEVONthink Server is made for working environments with non-Apple devices in the mix (or for bigger teams with team members who can or even should cope with the reduced functionality of the web interface).

You did not mention that either you or your wife use non-Apple devices. So if both of you use Macs, iPhones, and iPads I don’t see why you should get the server edition and have one Mac to be online 24/7 to run DEVONthink Server. DEVONthink Pro (which includes licences for the mobile devices) will do.

If you use more than two Macs you will have to get extra seats, but this is a one time purchase and will not increase the costs when you extend the licence for another year of updates.

Agree but for a different reason.

The functionality of Devonthink Server is considerably less than that of DT4 on a Mac.

Devonthink Server works for basic file downloading/uploading - but the overall viewing/editing experience is dramatically less capable on Server than DT4 Desktop.

I use both - with the Server used by my employees who do not have access to a Mac and who just upload/download documents. More complex work is done on DT4 Desktop.

There isn’t a right or wrong in terms of that your main computer is.

That is correct.

I’m not sure if you mean “sync” here.

I think you’re running in circles a bit.
Step back.
Breathe in.
Breathe out.

You need to clearly define the situation. For example…

  • What do you need when you’re out working?
  • What does your wife need access to?
    • What does she need to do in the database(s)?
    • Does she need frequent and rapid updates from you when you’re out?

… etc.

The Mini running Server could easily give her access to specific databases via the web interface… but you need to define what her needs are. And that could make the Mini, “the main computer”, functioning as a hub for both of you. In fact, it could be the hub for syncing as well, if need be.

I have a Mac book m5 and my wife has an iMac. We work on the same files some times or she need s access to some files I finished. Now we use Dropbox.

But for me dt4 is a big help I think. She just needs access to those files

So which license and how many we need to achieve that.

See DEVONtechnologies short answer as a FAQ on just this at:

so 1 license DT4PRO will work with my m5 and the iMac of my wife sync over dropbox.
then on both Macs should be the same data.

how is the versioning thing working when I am outside of the office and my wife is working on I file an I come back. I guess sync first and then start working!?

how about if we both work on the same file? is this possible or bad? what happens then? or do we get informed? how will DT4 combine the versions ? how should be our workflow the best. sorry to ask we are new to sharing data and dt4 !

thank you so much folks ! :man_bowing:

Yes, one license has two seats so each Mac gets one.

sync over dropbox.

You must both be using the same Dropbox account if you’re syncing the database via DEVONthink.

It’s not ideal, for sure. Is this a common thing that could occur and if so, why?

Sync conflicts are handled based on DEVONthink’s Settings > Sync > Conflict setting. You’re not informed of a conflict. It is handled transparently. If set to Duplicate documents, you will see files with copy appended to the name.
