Working with DEVONthink server for most machines apart from my main machine

Hi all, happy holidays!

I just bought a DEVONthink server license, mainly to use with many of my mobile devices such as phone, tablet, and mainly laptops. Yes, I know DEVONthink To Go is great, but I often prefer using the full DEVONthink without any sync overhead

What I’m trying to figure out is a way to have everything centralized on my DEVONthink server that’s on a Mac Mini and connect to that to the different devices. I also have a Mac Studio which I use most of the day. What I’m wondering is whether I can use my Mac Studio and get the full GUI DEVONthink interface to access the databases on the server. If that sounds crazy, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

What I’m wondering is whether I can use my Mac Studio and get the full GUI DEVONthink interface to access the databases on the server.

The simplest answer is: No.

  1. DEVONthink databases aren’t built-for simultaneous user access so if the Mini has a database open, the Studio can’t open the same database file.
  2. We advocate a decentralized system where each device has a local copy of a database but can sync to a commonly accessible location.

Assuming the Mini is running all the time (excluding a weekly reboot to be kind to it), DEVONthink on it could act as a Bonjour server with DEVONthink on the Studio connecting as a client.
