Write DT Location Path to File's Metadata // PDF Imprint

Hey!

Is there a way to somehow burn each file’s DT Location Path as text (“GroupA/GroupA1/GroupA1.1”) into the file’s metadata, so that it’s viewable outside of DT? Perhaps a script?

Use case: I have a bunch of files in DT within intricate Group Structures. Group Structures are important, as they tell me the source of the file and other important information. I need to share certain files with people who will be using different OS and none of them use DT. Burning the Groups File Path as text (“GroupA/GroupA1/GroupA1.1”) into the file metadata would add some context.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

What kind of files are we talking here? Only MD supports adding metadata to the file itself, for other types, metadata are either DT only or file system only. Which means that „other people“ possibly don’t see them.

Thanks chrillek! Mostly PDF files. Any workaround you can think of? Perhaps adding a comment to the first page of each file? Would that be scriptable?

Just curious: Are you expecting others to make use of this information?

Just to be able to see it, which would clarify for them the source of the document. It would clarify where the file came from. The problem is that the full Location path would be too long to write it, for example, in the filename.

I would hope this is never something you’d consider. :flushed:

And yes indeed this is possible and no, you don’t need a script.
Do you also need the database referenced?

Awesome! Can you point me in the right direction? No need for the database; just the Groups.

How do these look (though I did include the database reference :stuck_out_tongue: )

I was not aware of your design skills! Looks great. Like the second one better. Would that be printed on all pages or just the first? All pages would be great!

I prefer the second one also

You can define the pages that receive it.
Assuming you’re using the Pro or Server edition, this is merely an imprint (and the wizardry under-the-hood is from our own @aedwards).

Preferences > Imprinter

Appearance tab

Using the Database Name and Location placeholders.

Location tab

Position and pages to imprint controls

Preview

Click the Preview button to see what it will look like.

Note: I’d enable Duplicate item before printing at least while testing. You could disable this later, if you’d like, bearing in mind you can’t remove an imprint.

Thank you! This is just perfect. The ‘hidden’ power of DT never ceases to amaze me.
