3 → 4 Upgrade problem ("operation can't be completed")

Trying to install DT4 on the same machine where I’ve been using DT3. I chose “replace” rather than “keep both”, but I get this error message:

“The operation can’t be completed because some items had to be skipped. For each item, choose File > Get Info, make sure ‘Locked’ is deselected, and then check the Sharing & Permissions section. When you are sure the items are unlocked and not designated as Read Only or No Access, try again.”

I made sure DT was closed and that there were no DT-related processes running, but got the same results.

I rebooted and tried the installation again, with the same results.

Ideas? Thank you! Oh, and congratulations to the DEVONthink team for the release of Copernicus. Well-chosen name, too.

I guess you didn’t follow the steps suggested in the upgrader’s guide?

Might be worth a try.

Oh, but I did! What did I miss?

Are DT3 users expected to install DT4 alongside DT3? I’d prefer not to, myself, but do I not have the option of replacing DT3 with DT4?

Forgive me if I missed something in the upgrader’s guide and other docs I’ve checked. But I’m not finding the instructions that I need.

No, and this has been discussed during the beta phase.
At a minimum, delete the DEVONthink 3 application and reboot the machine. You may need to quit Safari first, as the browser extension could be loaded.

Try to compress DT3, remove the DT3 package but keep the archive. Then install DT4. That’s actually not in the upgrades guide but was the preferred procedure to install the betas. Upgrading from the latest beta world just fine, so I guess you might follow the pizza ahh described above.

OK, I did as you instructed, Jim, and deleted DT3.

I forgot to close Safari, but my installation of DT4 wasn’t hindered.

All systems go, it seems. Thanks.

SUGGESTION: Since users having difficulties are referred to the upgrader’s guide, maybe this bit of info should be included there. (I assume it’s not, as I had read it three times before being sent there by chrillek, but at my age it’s always possible to miss something.)

Incidentally, I had in fact installed all three DT4 betas, but as I conscientiously followed the instructions (!), I never installed DT4 on the same machine as DT 3, so I never ran into this slight annoyance.

You’re welcome and your suggestion is noted.

to make sure I have this straight, the upgrade guide doesn’t specify if DT3 can be left installed or if it has to be removed first.

I never ran the beta so my machine is currently clean with the latest DT3. Am I to delete DT3 and reboot BEFORE installing DT4? Also, I’m running Hazel with the app unistaller sweep feature which will prompt and remove any unnecessary leftover files and configs.

Should I allow Hazel to delete those leftover files or should I keep them around for them to be used by DT4?

Do not run an uninstaller app.
You can delete the DEVONthink 3 application and launch DEVONthink 4.

Users who don’t frequent the forum and who didn’t instal the betas might not infer from the upgrade guide that deletion of DT3 is recommended. The ‘Switch to Devonthink 4’ section of the guide doesn’t mention it.

I do frequent the forum and I installed all three DT 4 betas (on a different machine and/or different user account from where I had DT 3), but I still didn’t know that deleting DT 3 was recommended (necessary?) before installing DT 4.

This is obviously not the intention, but it’s actually possible to read the guide as implying that having DT3 and DT4 installed together is ok: ‘Should you have both app generations installed …’

I seem to recall that DT2 had to be completely uninstalled for DT3, and Support had a very useful uninstal guide somewhere on the forum.

Actually, the transition from 2 to 3 was handled in the same way as 3 to 4.

Apologies, I obviously misinterpreted the advice re running DT2 and DT3 on the same machine

No worries.
