Add highlight colour to toolbar

Being able to “customise toolbar” is great as it allows quick access to the things you use most often. What I use most often at the moment is the “highlight colour” option. The label colours are available on the toolbar, but I can’t figure out how to add the highlight colours to it. Any help appreciated!

I don’t see an option like that; I’m pretty sure it’s not possible. (Well, maybe with a custom toolbar script, but I don’t see the point.)

Isn’t the Editing Bar enough?

You can also assign keyboard shortcuts to the different colors.

If you use a trackpad, it’s also possible to do some magic with Better Touch Tool, like here:

Highlighting problems

If you, like me, don’t want to use keyboard shortcuts for highlighting, you could also use Better Touch Tool to enable highlighting with Magic Trackpad gestures, like a 4 finger tap, to make this much faster than using the contextual menu (which would drive me nuts because it’s so slow). I have used the Format->Highlight Color->Highlight Blue keyboard shortcut via the System Settings for years.

It appears the DT4 update broke these shortcuts. Now I can’t seem to get them to work.

Has the assigning of keyboard shortcuts to highlight text (on/off) and to differen highlight colors protocol changed?

1. no. I did initially when testing DT4 and prior to discovering the highlighting change But now, days later after following your instructions posted above and then deleting DT3 all together, I know have just DT4 installed

2. Mac OS 15.4 (24E248)

yellow highlight = Command + Option + 5

green highlight = Command + Option + 6

blue highlight = Command + Option + 7

orange highlight = Command + Option + 8

purple highlight = Command + Option + 9

no highlight = Command + Option + 0

And those were registered to DEVONthink 3 or 4?

They were originally registered in system settings when I was using DT3.

They did not transfer over in the mac os system setting application keyboard shortcut space.

and now I’m unable to assign the command + option + number to any highlight color

Has apple changed the → arrow combo between file commands to something different?

OK, so after my last posting, I went back and tried one more combo and it worked. (see attached screenshot. I am now able to assign highlight color choices at will, like before. I am unsure what changed.
