When I ask the AI chat to rename files, it tells me that it is not able to do so:
It would be really cool if the AI had access to a tool it could call to do this for me. Apologies if this functionality already exists and I am not aware of it.

There’s an option in the AI settings to allow the chat assistant to change properties & contents. This is intentionally off by default.
What do you have selected?
If you have multiple items selected in the item list, you can use Via Chat > Rename from the Action (…) menu (noting these are webarchives and being processed with Claude 4.5 Sonnet)…

I had just launched chat from a folder with nothing selected. The AI was able to locate the files and help me determine how to rename them, but when I asked it to do so, it was unable to. I didn’t have anything selected since I was just chatting with the whole folder.
Interestingly, AI in DEVONthink 4 is similarly claiming it can’t rename documents in the current location when prompted via the Chat assistant. This is the case across multiple providers and models so I’m not sure if there’s just a broken tool call or … ? @cgrunenberg would know.
However…
It is better to explicitly select items to act on.
Currently, the global Chat assistant in DEVONthink To Go 4 disables with multiple selected items. I have filed an improvement request but mobile development will have to assess it.
Renaming can be done without using the Chat assistant as show in my GIF.
Screenshots of the complete window and of the AI > Chat settings would be useful. If the items aren’t selected, then the chat assistant is only able to optionally search in the current location.
As expected. There are no selected items in the item list and the sidebar’s selection restricts only the search.
Indeed, as I noted…
But in the documentation for the next release, I will clarify property and content changes require selected items to act on.
