Any outliner with DEVONthink quick-look capabilities?

Yep, I know this subject has been extensively discussed in the past (and not-so-distant past) - still, here’s my question:

I used OmniOutliner in the past, and now I find I can’t see a preview in DT, just the generic icon. This for oo3 files.

Is there ANY app out there, that does simple outlines, I just need the folding capability, I’m OK with clicking to open the file externally. I’ve been scouring the net and can’t find anything.

Any ideas?

Do you stil have OmniOutliner installed? Which version?

The quicklook works fine for me (newest version installed). You might need to enable it in system settings. There’s also an option for thumbnails, which I have disabled.

In other words, this is not a problem with DEVONthink.

You can also fold/unfold rows in the preview.

Thanks DTLow - do you mean just using a code editor to work on the file?

Works in Markdown; just use the Devonthink editor

Thanks Troejgaard - I am using the Free Viewer v5.14.
I used to have OO, than for many years didn’t need it. I can try enabling it in system settings, but not sure the free viewer works for that. But at least I know it works for you, so I might just buy the upgrade.

Hm, I’m on Sequoia. QuickLook is enabled for OO, but no QL previews.

troejgaard, by newest version, you mean of Omni Outliner? may I ask what is your version - thanks

Yes, I mean OmniOutliner. I recall there was some trouble with the QuickLook plugin back when they first released version 5, but that was fixed a long time ago. Thought you might still have an older version installed, if any at all.

I’m running OmniOutliner Pro 5.14 (v219.4.17) on macOS Ventura 13.6.9. The version from their website, not the app store, though I don’t see why that should make a difference… Unless there’s some weird sandboxing/permission-stuff going on, since the QuickLook plugin is bundled with the app. That’s just spitballing though, I have a bunch of apps from the App Store, and their QuickLook plugins work fine.

But… I don’t understand why you would upgrade to Sequoia so soon! I see many bug reports.

I was about to say that I don’t see any free viewer on their website, but I see that the App Store version says: “After the trial, you can continue to use OmniOutliner to view documents for free.” — I assume that’s what you’re reffering to.

I just checked my System Settings. I remember there being separate extensions/toggles for thumbnails and the quicklook preview. Under quicklook extensions I have one called “OmniOutlinerThumbnails”, which I don’t have enabled. In the list of all added extensions there is only listed one OmniOutliner extension, which I assume is the same one, but here it has a different name (probably localization).

So when you say

I’m not sure whay you’re referring to?

So, troubleshooting. First of all I would try to restart quicklook. Open up the terminal and type this command:

qlmanage -r

Maybe restart the finder afterwards. (ALT + right click on Finder in the dock, choose restart)

If that doesn’t help, try and download the version directly from their website and see if that makes a difference. For good measure, make sure to actually launch the app. From what I understand that’s often needed for extensions to properly register. Then restart quicklook again.

Edit: Also have you made sure that OmniOutliner is set as the default app for your files? I don’t think another app would highjack .oo3 or .ooutline files, but just to be sure.

Hi troejgaard - yep, Sequoia has been a bit buggy in some ways, but useful in others (being able to use my iPhone onscreen for one, is very helpful). But yes, buggy :frowning:

The Extension settings for Sequoia doesn’t have the ability to toggle thumbnails and preview separately. It is a very very simple panel, maybe Apple will get to it, I hope. I see QL toggles for Omni Outliner and 3 other apps, but none for the many other apps that supported QL before - so yeah, that’s what’s happening unfortunately. Hoping they are not killing it altogether, just didn’t yet have the time.

Tried all of it. qlmanage -p of an omn i outliner file on the desktop resulted in an error (no such job).
Resetting (-r) nominally reset it, but did nothing.
I did download a fresh OO dmg, open the package, dragged the .md files for spotlight and QL into both the system and user libraries (folders Spotlight and QuickLook), restarted the Mac (an M1 Max) and nothing.

OO is set as default for the .oo3 & .ooutline files.

Running out of ideas

We have some changes coming that should improve thumbnailing of third-party file types, but I can’t say much more than that.

please, pretty please?..

Can I bribe you with a whole bottle of Porto here in Portugal?

No can do, my friend. You can open hold the Option key and choose Help > Report bug to start a support ticket and we can look at the logs.

I’m no expert on this, but I remember reading there were some major changes to how QuickLook plugins are handled some macOS versions ago (Montery? ealier? I was trying to install an older plugin for .srt files this way earlier this year and looked through some GitHub discussions). Specifically that it should no longer be possible to manually install them by adding a .qlgenerator file to Library/QuickLook, user or system. So I mean, actually launch the app and open a file. (And probably uninstall the App Store version, just to make sure there’s no conflicts).

What do you see if you ask for a list of QuickLook plugins in the terminal?( qlmanage -m plugins )
For me it lists several com.omnigroup.omnioutliner handlers (or whatever they’re called).

The qlmanage -p command also works for me, even though I get some error messages in the terminal.

It seems that @uimike 's problem is QuickLook previews for OmniOutliner files in general, not specifically in DEVONthink. And as demonstrated, it works fine for me.

It might very well be some stupid Sequoia-bug.

That would come as no surprise to me either.

I see Apple (iWork, keynote, iCal, tv, iChat, etc., etc.), Microsoft, openxml, but zero others.

I will try to uninstall OmniOutliner and reinstall to see what happens
