Assign Hotkey to Edit->Tags

Hi all,

I was trying to change the Hotkey for Edit->Tags… menu item via MacOS system settings but I cannot get it working. I read somewhere that the three dots “…” arent simply three dots, but some special characters, but I cannot remember which one and where I read this.

Can someone help me out here?

Also I had in mind, that there was a very fast way of editing the tags in the bottom tag row with just a single key tap of the L key or am I mixing up things with a different app?

Thanks in advance for helping me out.

The three dots, “…”, are called ellipsis. How you type this depends on you keyboard layout – it should be ⌥ (Option) + some character. On my nordic keyboard the combination is ⌥ + X.

If you want to get more familiar with your language-specific keyboard layout and all the special characters, you can use the macOS Keyboard Viewer. This floating window shows a live view of your keyboard – and how the keys change when pressing one or more modifier keys. Here I am pressing ⌥ :

More generally, I recommend the free app CustomShortcuts, which makes it much quicker and easier to change keyboard shortcuts. Select an app and add a new shortcut. Start typing a Menu Item and it searches the options – select the appropriate one, and it autocompletes for you. Then you don’t have to worry about special characters :slight_smile:

Here I think you are mixing something up. I guess you could theoretically set this up manually, but I don’t think that is a good idea. At least not key normally used in text input. Maybe a Function key if you want to?

Or maybe a single-key shortcut doesn’t activate if a text input field has focus? I do have some applications with single-character hotkeys, most prominently Photo Mechanic. The shortcuts are part of the speedy workflow.

But for DEVONthink, I think you always want Edit > Tags… to activate – even if you are typing text in a document. How do you expect a single “L” to work for this?

This app looks great I will have a look

Yes exactly this was what I had in mind OmniFocus has a similar behavior. I was totally sure this was also for DT but also I couldn’t tell which key combination it was. I am probably confusing this. I am normally using DT when my MB is connected to my desktop setup with mouse and keyboard maybe I am normally simply clicking in the field. Now I was on a trip and used the MB mobile and was totally confused how I am normally doing that.

I will test it with a new shortcut via customShortcuts.

Thank you for helping out.
