Feature Request: Automated Versioned Documentation Sync for AI Assistant Context
Submitted to: DEVONtechnologies Development Team
Product: DEVONthink
Version: 4.2.1
Date: March 1, 2026
Summary
Request the implementation of an automated mechanism that downloads, maintains, and exposes version-specific official documentation as a persistent knowledge base accessible to the integrated AI assistant.
Problem Statement
The current integrated AI assistant lacks reliable access to DEVONthink’s official documentation, resulting in potentially inaccurate or outdated responses to user queries about application features, workflows, and behaviors. Users must manually source, import, and select reference documents to improve assistant accuracy, creating unnecessary friction.
Proposed Solution
Implement a versioned documentation auto-sync systemthat:
-
Automatically downloads the current version’s official documentation bundle upon:
-
Documentation bundle includes:
-
User Manual (PDF and/or structured text)
-
Release Notes
-
AppleScript/Automation reference
-
Any additional author-validated knowledge base articles
-
Stores documentation in a dedicated, protected system-level database or container not visible in the user’s database list but accessible to the AI assistant context engine
-
Version-locks the documentation to match the exact running version of DEVONthink, preventing context mismatch between features and documentation
-
Validates authenticity of downloaded documentation via cryptographic signature from DEVONtechnologies to ensure integrity and prevent tampering
Expected Benefits
-
Significantly improved AI assistant accuracy for feature-related queries
-
Reduced user friction in setting up and maintaining assistant context
-
Ensures the assistant reflects current and accurateapplication behavior
-
Establishes a scalable pattern for future documentation and knowledge base expansion
Thanks for the suggestion! DEVONthink’s help assistant actually has already access to the latest documentation. In addition, please note that this is a user forum and AI-generated posts are not welcome. See Welcome to our user community

I apologize for having used AI to rewrite my feature request in the clearest manner possible and that developers would best understand. The idea and parameters are genuine my own, just cleaned up by AI.
No need to be this formal with a request. You can merely say, “I was wondering if this is possible…” This also encourages more conversation since smaller bits of text are more likely to be read by people popping in and out. While we are more present than many software companies, we also don’t sit on our forums waiting for someone to say something.
Also, implementation, so the how a feature works under-the-hood, is something development decides.

Thanks Jim for your response. I get it that in a forum the idea is just to talk and be kind and helpful. You all are!
Regarding my original concern and the initial responses to my post, I was pointed towards the “DEVONthink’s help assistant” as the feature I requested. But I have not found this advice to resolve my issue
“DEVONthink’s help assistant” is not integrated with the AI. Its a search facility of your current version’s Release Notes. You can do normal word searches but not ask a question, as far as I saw. The AI was sitting on the right side of the open Release Notes document but the chat’s prompt field was blocked.
I was suggesting AI access to full text Users Handbook or approved and current reference material. AI chat from any point in the software should have current version context, not only while having the User Handbook or other approved document open besides the AI Chat box.
Its just a suggestion for the developers to consider. Your product is so simple yet so powerful it attracts users from all walks of life. Thus can prove invalueble to the newbie as well as the seasoned user.
Thanks for your time and attention.
The help viewer and its search has access to the complete and current documentation.
The help viewer’s chat supports only tested, suitable and affordable models. Which AI do you use?
The text is overly verbose, not to the point and misleading.
- The scripting dictionary is part of the application bundle anyway, so it’s automagically updated with any new software version
- The same goes for the user manual and the release notes.
- What would be the point of having a “versioned” documentation if the documentation installed with the software is always up to date anyway?
The text is not “clear” at all. It chats endlessly about things that are neither here nor there.
Good starting points to begin your DT experience are the provided manual (accessible through the Help menu) and/or the “Take Control of DT 4” PDF available online. Much better than asking a dumb AI and blindly relying on its answers.

I want to be humble about this whole thing. But honestly, I have not found the AI implementation satisfactory. It has very limited context anthough I setup Claud 4.6 Sonnet with a 32,768 window. Sometimes it ask you to highlight the section of the book you are asking about because it cannot “see” the section you are referring to. I recognize and accept I’m a newble and the product is comprehensive… But, to call “my AI enhanced” formal feature request “not to the point and misleading” is arrogant and goes to far. It was my first post. I thought this was the channel to communicate formally with the developers for consideration of an idea. My bad, this is a looser forum format, sorry.
This whole experience with experienced DT users is starting to sound like my first visit to the Apple Store in 2003. I was a long time Windows user and began the journey of appreciating macOS. I dared ask the rep, “how can I get WinAmp on my Mac mini?” The Apple employee looked at me with a puzzled and condescending look and said, “why on earth would you want that? Just use iTunes!” Well, I don’t want to use iTunes…. But iTunes does it all… its all in there… you don’t need anything else….
Really? Give me a break.
I can’t find the exact icons you refer to. I found a grayed-out AI icon to the right of the “gear icon.” Why is it “greyed-out?”
There is a “Chat” icon that open the right-side panel with AI Chat entry at the bottom. But nothing like the illustration. I tried hitting Enter in the search field ton looked. I tried the dropdown list at the left of the search entry field. None have a functional AI icon. Entering a natural language seacrch did not yield a translation to search term syntax. I’m at a loss. My version in DT 4.2.1 and may have different design elements.
maybe if you post a screenshot here,
we better understand what you are seeing.
