Beachball all the time

DT has gotten frightfully slow. I think it must be the fact that some items are indexed, and some of these are on an external HDD.

What do DT experts and veterans do when every damn time you open a new window, or hit CMD-OPT-F to permit yourself to search, or even change focus, the beachball comes up for 6 – 12 seconds?

One quick thought:

  1. Put all external HDD-indexed things in a separate database
  2. Keep this database closed 90% of the time
  3. Use DT bookmarks (Copy Item Link pastings) as pointers to all the files in this database, not files that are indexes to those HDD files.

P.S. — I predict that I’ll be asked to send an Activity Monitor output, so I’ll do that shortly.

Exactly  The issue might also be caused by virtual memory. How many items & words (see File > Database Properties) do all of your concurrently opened databases contain and how much RAM does your Mac have? Finally, did you index items located in cloud folders too, e.g. iCloud Drive?
