Best practices for migrating DT with a gap between an old and new laptop?

I’m moving university jobs at the end of this semester. As part of that transition, I will return my university laptop Macbook Pro, and won’t be able to purchase a new Mac until I officially start in January. So I will be without a computer for 4-6 weeks.

What are the best practices for ensuring that I can move my DT database with minimal loss of data? I have an SSD drive and will be using my iPad as my sole device until I get at my new job. I won’t need access to anything during that time, thankfully, since December will be mostly moving and holidays. But since all my other transfers had both machines side-by-side, I could always ensure the transfer went smooth and fix any issues on the fly. I won’t have that option now.

Thanks in advance for any tips, even if it is just as simple as dropping the database files onto the SSD.

Are you importing or indexing files into your databases?

My apologies, I should have specified. Both, but I’m specifically thinking about the downloaded database. I have some indexed files that I plan on just re-indexing once I get the new machine up and running.

No worries!

See Help > Tutorials > Migrate DEVONthink.
And as far as the indexed items, you do not need to reindex them if you put them in the same relative place. So if you’re indexing a folder in Documents, put the same folder in Documents on the new Mac.
