Bibtex with DT3

I was excited to see that when I indexed my .bib file and viewed in Devonthink, it is already visualized as a database (aka Sheet), and I can view the whole thing or individual entries. That’s amazing! It almost makes it possible to use the Zotero+BetterBibtex-created .bib file as a master list of all works I’m consulting.

Does anyone have any particular tips on using, accessing, or editing a Bibtex file within Devonthink?

In particular, I’m wondering:

  • Can I make the Zotero tags, which show up as “keywords” in Bibtex, work alongside Devonthink tags? (Is there a placeholder to extract a field from a sheet?)
  • Can I link .md note files or PDFs to particular entries in the Bibtex sheet? (Can I copy a link straight to a single entry in a sheet?)
  • Is there a way to generate a subset of the main sheet? For instance, I have one project on sugar and one on doping, and sources are tagged project_sugar or project_doping. Any way to extract all the entries tagged just project_doping?

You can select rows in the table view of a sheet then drag and drop or copy → Data > New > From Clipboard to create a new sheet.

Thanks! That’s very useful. I imagine doing that dynamically/auto-updating would be more difficult. Is it possible to sort/filter a sheet within DT?

You’re welcome.

Difficult? Yes. Impossible? Likely not but there is no generic scenario I can think of.

You can sort via the column headers but no there is no filtering at this time.
