Bonjour Syncing between two DTTGs without wifi

I just got an iPad and am thinking on certain business trips I’ll leave the macbook at home. I found on previous trips that bonjour sync between my phone and mac was difficult on hotel wifi and started using a direct usb connection. So, I’m wondering is there any possible way to perform a sync between two mobile devices running DTTG without the use of wifi?

I haven’t really looked into enabling bonjour and icloud syncing, but I think I’ve read this is possible. If this is my best option, then I can look more into that but I figured I’d ask!

What is the connector type on each device?

Lightning cables are built to transfer data so if you have an iPhone with a Lightning port and an iPad with a USB-C port, you can use a USB-C to Lightning cable to sync-by-wire. (And I just did that here.)

If you have two USB-C devices, you have to use a USB-C cable that supports data transfer. Not all do and usually the cheapest ones are for power delivery only.

If you have two devices with Lightning ports, you’re out of luck unless you want to buy some questionable cable off eBay :flushed:

I have iphone-lightning and ipad-usb-c so I’ll give that a try again! I attempted once and didn’t get good results, though I didn’t go through all my normal syncing troubleshooting steps (i often have to restart dttg or dt3 to get servers to be recognized and didn’t in this case).

Do you expect any issues if I did icloudKit and multiple server bonjour syncing (edit: by multiple server I’m refering to my mac dt3 as a server syncing with both iphone and ipad and my iphone bonjour server on to sync between iphone and ipad)? Noting the fairly regular bonjour troubleshooting steps mentioned above, I’m wondering if icloudkit will be helpful as another method ready to help syncing when i’m out and about. If all the above options works it feels like that gives me the most reliable syncing… is that a reasonable expectation?

Thanks!

OK, after restarting both DTTGs and clicking “trust” this computer, i did get it to work. That’s awesome! I’d still appreciate if anyone else has any thoughts regarding icloud + bonjour servers on mac and iphone, but this is a very encouraging result. Especially because it means i can sync things up while still on the plane or out of service!

You’ll find some hints regarding iCloud sync by using the search function here in the forum. No need to repeat everything that has been said already. Note that everything is highly subjective – there are people for which iCloud sync is not reliable enough and others who have no complaints.

As mentioned, CloudKit is a mixed bag. Some use it with no issues; some run into frequent problems. While we don’t advocate for any particular service, Dropbox has been more consistently reliable over the long term.

I do not use CloudKit. I use DropBox for my internet synching (and Bonjour for sync at Global HQ). Dropbox works pretty much everywhere but on airplanes and trains where they typically block it to protect bandwidth. Works in all the hotels I can recall. That being said, I think (after being reminded of the idea in this thread) I’ll take my USB data wire on next trip to do quick and fast Bonjour syncing in hotels.

I use it in coffee shops, restaurants, and McDonalds’ all over the US. Works beautifully

Thanks for all the comments. I’m trying out iCloud for now and will always keep cords with me! Appreciate it!
