Bookend bibliographies in Markdown

Hi, I’m trying to follow the various Bookend discussions and tips, but I’m having a hard time connecting them to my use case.
I have Bookends and want to use it to create references in Markdown files and, now and then, generate a reference list/bibliography, as illustrated below.
I currently keep all PDF files in DT and only references in Bookends.

I tried to scan the markdown file with Bookends, but no bibliography was generated for the following APA style.
I managed to import Bookend Reference using the File Import. I guess it’s for using DT to index them for search and related tasks. But I cannot find out how this will help my use case?!

Any tips on how to make this straightforward integration between DT and Bookends work?

Bookends can create markdown files containing various types of information about the references in the library. What BE cannot do with just one pass is create one markdown file in the format of the example you give. Your format has part 1 with reference notes and part 2 with reference citation information. A one pass output from BE would be a list of content one reference at a time. You will get an output as: reference A notes + reference A citation, reference B notes + reference B citation, … To get your format, you would have to make two export passes from BE, one to export part 1 (reference list notes) and one to export part 2 (reference list citations).

FWIW, here is a link to an example to export a markdown file from BE to Obsidian.

In DT, are you importing all PDF files or are you indexing all PDF files?

In my integration between DT and BE, I store all PDFs in the BE attachments folders and index (not import) that folder in DT.

You might ask on the BE forum for insights on integrating with DT.

thanks!
Im indexing files in DT and dont want ot add them as attachments in BookEnds.
The text I showed included two parts. One text with references. The other was an example after a scan was done to create bibliography from references that was found in the scan.
Il have a look at Bookends forum.
Otherwise Perplexity gave a good step by step.

I misunderstood what you wanted. You did not want to export information from your bibliography database (which is what I showed you). You wanted to scan a document to extract its citation keys and create a bibliography listing.

I am glad to hear that an AI tool could help you solve your problem.

If you were importing the PDFs into DT, they must not be added as attachments in BE. Since you are indexing the PDFs into DT, their source files can safely be attachments to references in BE. The indexing from DT should be pointed to the PDF files in the BE Attachments folder.

The tools in BE complement (not compete with) the tools in DT. A search on the BE forum for the phrase “Devonthink” will reveal a good bit of information with other insights that you may find useful.
