Deleting apps rarely have an impact …
Did you add the sync store with the same name as the old one? If so, don’t. Create a store with a different name.
as written above: yes, I did create a new sync store with a NEW name…
I’lm ok with continuing to help think this through, but I’m now confused and can’t figure out what problem we are fixing. Could you please re-state the problem, your expectations, etc.
I think you have done alle these things, but the thread is long, so I’d like to sum up and check with you:
you have
- verified and repaired all the databases on the Mac, and no errors remained
- cleaned the sync location on Dropbox and set up a new location with a new name
- erased the app and its data from your iOS devices (not just offloaded)
- reinstalled the app on all iOS devices, verifying that at that time the apps showed no databases and no sync locations
- activated Bonjour on the Mac and synced DTTG on each iOS device with DT on Mac
- not yet activated sync with the sync store on Dropbox in DTTG on the iOS devices
Please post a screenshot of the Locations window in DTTG > Sync > Locations for each device, but especially the iPhone, and the equivalent window in DT on macOS.
yup. I’ll send you the screenshots per PM. the third iPad has not been updated yet…
Thanks for the images. The only immediately obvious thing is that the iPhone is syncing with a different local network device than the iPad. I note that the iPad has successfully synced “Eingang”, whilst the iPhone has not. I suspect you may have two devices (an MBA and an MBP), both of which are offering Bonjour connections. The database “Eingang” may be corrupt in some way on the MBA. The MBA is an M1 device, which may be “awake” even though you are not aware of the fact.
If my assumption is correct, deactivate Bonjour on the MBA, delete and reinstall DTTG and on the iPhone, and sync the iPhone with the MBP. If that is successful, a second step will be to deal with “Eingang” on the MBA. I would isolate the MBA in the meantime, i.e. check that it is not syncing with anything and is not offering Bonjour connections.
(This post was written before your last message, which confirms some of my suspicions, became available; it is unclear to me at the moment whether the iPhone or the MBA is the culprit here.)
One more thing I note: the image of the MBA shows one database “Not yet synced, merge with remote database” (last database in the image); it is that same database that the iPhone is trying to sync via Bonjour with the MBA in the image you sent.
- “Eingang” is the German word for INBOX. It just translates when using a German environment.
The MBP used to be the master till yesterday. The machine is/was great, but is old and will be replaced at some point of time.
The new Master will be the M1 MBA.
First the MBP got its data from the MBA (yesterday). Next, the iPhone got its data from one machine, the iPad from the other in order to speed things up. Later, all will be synced using the dropbox…
The third iPad is momentary not online… same with the third Machine which is currently my backup in case all goes wrong.
one thing, though, seems to be cool:
maybe, after all, DT found its “problem” … let’s give it some time…
I woas scho; I hob bloß gmoant, I schreib “Eingang”, weils so aufm Buidl steht.
Whilst I appreciate your impatience (syncing different devices to different Bonjour servers) - and, as one of my companions here recently said of himself “patience is not one of my given names” - when bug fixing taking it one step at a time comes highly recommended. In this case that would mean syncing one device - and maybe one database - at a time, using one sync method only. You’ve put your foot to the floor, and I agree it is worth giving the process some time to see how it works out. If you do have to redo things though, I’d recommend to take it one step at a time and let that step complete before going on.
your are absolutely right… that would had been the very last option… coming from an IT background myself, I do try to work the logic first… and if that should fail as well, then go the real stony way
Things to do whilst waiting…
- unblock the kitchen sink
- clean the windows
- kick a ball
- listen to some music
- scream at the top of your voice
Give it some time and post back here later on when sync has finished - I’ll keep my thumbs pressed that you report success.
Go into the Apps/DEVONthink Packet Sync folder in your Dropbox account online. How many .dtCloud directories do you see?
one too many… thnx for asking… that happened in the beginning when DEVONew and DEVONnew looked alike… but I caught the problem… the old DEVONstore is still there with the 250GB+ even though I cleaned all… but, don’t forget, I have been a DTDP user since Version 1.x and in that period of time I had a new mobile device every now and then, also several desktops etc. I am pretty sure the old junk is still in it…
I figured there was detritus from past syncs lurking about. If it were me, I’d delete any dtCloud directory in the DEVONthink Packet Sync folder except the current one.
already done.
how about any locations on the computer itself… any library /… / “cloudy” stuff I can delete without causing any real harm?
While it’s technically possible (though not without our assistance), DEVONthink should keep things tidy on its own, so you shouldn’t need to mess about with this. For example, my Cloudy directory is only 17MB.
so. 59GB of ghost data in the INBOX are gone… on all devices!
thnx!!
next: you mention that your cloudy is about 17 MEGAbytes… well… on one machine I got 230 GIGAbytes, on the other 330GB (!)… any way to get that to a more “normal” size? thänx for any hints.
(the third machine, an old MBA for contingency backup usage holds a “small” 23GB in cloudy)
