Click Behavior on Groups in Search Results (DEVONthink Server Web Interface)

Summary

In DEVONthink Server 4’s web interface, double-clicking on groups (folders) displayed in search results unexpectedly triggers name editing mode instead of opening the group to display its contents.

Current Behavior

When performing a search in DEVONthink Server’s web interface:

  1. Search results include both documents and groups (folders)

  2. Clicking on a document in the results works as expected (previews the document)

  3. Clicking on a group in the results does nothing, Double-Clicking starts name editing mode instead of opening the group

  4. Users must find alternative ways to navigate into groups found through search

Impact

This behavior disrupts the search workflow, particularly when:

  • Users search for specific folders/groups they want to access

  • The search returns many results and users want to quickly navigate into found groups

  • Users expect consistent double-click behavior across the interface

Environment

  • Product: DEVONthink Server 4

  • Interface: Web browser interface (not desktop application)

  • Context: Search results display

  • Affected Elements: Groups/folders in search result listings

Suggested Solutions

Primary Request

Would it be possible to modify the click or double-click handler for groups in search results? This would allow double-clicking to open/expand the group rather than entering edit mode, creating a more consistent user experience.

Alternative Request

If modifying the double-click behavior presents technical challenges, would it be feasible to make the path displayed in the Info column clickable? This would provide users with an alternative navigation method by allowing them to click on path segments to navigate directly to the corresponding location in the folder hierarchy.

Alternative Workarounds

Currently, users must:

  • Use right-click context menus (if available)

  • Navigate manually through the folder structure

  • Use single-click selection followed by other navigation methods

We would greatly appreciate either of these enhancements, as they would significantly improve the user experience and workflow consistency in DEVONthink Server’s web interface.

Suggested Solutions

I did find this somewhat related request here, but it did not address this feature request entirely:

Thank you for considering this request!

Thanks for the report!

  • What version of DEVONthink and operating system are you using?
  • What browser and platform are you using?

Hi,

thanks for the quick reply. I’m using DEVONthink 4.1 Server-Edition and did test with Firefox and Safari on MacOS (Sequoia) as well as Safari on iOS (iOS 26).

My impression is that this is not a bug, but rather a feature that has not been implemented.

Thanks!

You’re welcome!
I am seeing double-clicks navigate into the group.

Single-click allows editing the item’s name.
The last one is a double-click though it looks like Tahoe’s screen recording is also buggy.

Thank you for your prompt reply! The screen recording is helpful!

Double-clicking works in “normal mode” just as it does in your screen recording. My concern relates to the list of search results (I may not have explained this clearly enough above—my apologies). Based on your screen recording, these do not appear to be search results.

Does double-clicking work for you in groups in search results?

Thanks!

Gotcha and nope. It may be due to you not being in the location of the group.
@aedwards: I don’t know how feasible this is but…

The navigation to a group in the search results is currently not supported however I will look to add this in a future update.
