Color alone might not be useful for some people. Think color blindness or so.

If this is implemented, it should certainly be an option, and not default. As @chrillek remarked some people benefit from redundant signals. Actually, @rkaplan remarked the same earlier. Myself, I actually much prefer to see the replicants in both red AND italic. Personal preferences…

Yep - should be a option/choice (as per quoted text).
As long as we are going down this path, I petition for color, font face, and style of duplicates and replicates as parameters that are all three accessible not only on a Settings panel but also through AppleScript. I envision creating a KM toggle button to switch a given view through ALL, DUPLICATES, and REPLICATES. The latter two choices would set text for all in the list view to a just visible level (e.g. light gray) and then highlight only the chosen case in the desired manner.
One could use such a visual toggle approach to see more efficiently not only how many of any given case are present but also where they sit in a list.
