Database will not open

After I click OPEN database (with problematic db selected), I see a very brief appearance of the DT icon. Then nothing. Same response wheter I try to open this database from DT or whether I double-click on the DB icon in Finder.

What should I do?

Sorry you are having problems. Need a bit more info in order for anyone to assist from here, and in the end DEVONthink support may invite you to send in a support request with crash info. Meantime:

  • what version of DEVONthink?
  • what version of maOS?
  • have you tried to restart the computer?
  • is sync involved, and if so what method used for this problematic database?
  • where is the problematic database stored, giving full path. Is it at a location synch’ed with a third party sync service?
  • Using macOS disk “optimisation”, called “Store in iCloud” on some versions of macOS?
  • do other databases open ok?
  • can you create a new database and open it ok?
  • do you have backups of the database available?

Q&A

  1. what version of DEVONthink? version 3.9.17
  2. what version of maOS? 14.8.3
  3. have you tried to restart the computer? yes
  4. is sync involved, and if so what method used for this problematic database? No
  5. where is the problematic database stored, giving full path. <Joseph’s MacBook Pro/3 BackUp 6TB> (top-level of external HD)
  6. Is it at a location synch’ed with a third party sync service? No
  7. Using macOS disk “optimisation”, called “Store in iCloud” on some versions of macOS? Not to my knowledge
  8. do other databases open ok? yes
  9. can you create a new database and open it ok? yes
  10. do you have backups of the database available? no. It is possible that this file was created by Carbon Copy Cloner as a backup. But I do not think so because of the problematic creation date of 1969. Other databases also display 1969 as creation date; how can I correct date?

You appear to be trying to open a backup. You should restore it to your internal drive and try open it from there.
