Devonthink 4.0beta1 – Files sent to Finder "Inbox" disappear

Hi all,

I’m currently using Devonthink 4.0beta1 and wanted to share a finding that might be useful for the team and others in the community.

In previous versions, I had the “Inbox” displayed in the Finder sidebar, and whenever I moved files there, they were reliably transferred into Devonthink’s Global Inbox.

However, after installing DT4 (following the instructions provided here in the forum), this behavior seems to have changed. Files moved to the Finder’s “Inbox” now appear to disappear entirely – they don’t show up in the Global Inbox, nor in the Trash, nor anywhere else I’ve looked. Essentially, they’re heading straight to Nirvana. :man_in_lotus_position:

I’ve searched the forum but haven’t found a clear explanation or solution yet.

To be clear: this is not a complaint – I fully understand I’m using a beta version and things are still in flux. I just wanted to provide some feedback in case it’s helpful for others or the dev team.

Also, side note: I’m really enjoying DT4 overall – the new features are promising, though I’ve found the AI capabilities (summarization, etc.) still somewhat limited, whether using OpenAI API or LM Studio with different models. But I’m excited to see where it’s going!

Maybe it’s the old inbox of DEVONthink 3 and not the one of DEVONthink 4?

I had the same phenomenon and, yes, it was the DT3 inbox. starting up DT3 showed those “missing” files in my DT3 inbox (and subsequently in my DT4 inbox after shutting down DT3 and re-starting DT4 with the same databases).

DEVONthink > Install Add-ons… removes the old inbox of version 3 if the option to install the inbox is enabled. But concurrent usage of both versions is not recommended.

I realized I had some AppleScripts running in other places that were moving files to the DT3 inbox instead of the DT4 inbox. It was an easy fix, but what had gone wrong was not immediately obvious.

I had a similar problem, I waited till the beta was gone and 4 is great, very smooth which I love since I use large thumbnails views a lot, mainly in fact and screenshots too.

However I had an issue similar to one discussed here with the ‘inbox’ in finder. I saw this and found all old DEVONthink 3 files were still in the Library and deleted them. It seemed ok after that, I re installed ‘inbox’ and I did have to redirect screenshots into the new inbox. I have a system where screenshots are saved into there and I saved to a ‘new location’ when I re installed the ‘inbox’.
