Devonthink and MojoPad MCP

MojoPad is a relatively new app promoted as a successor to VooDooPad. It is a personal/local Mac Wiki with some modern software features. The developer is very open to feature suggestions.

Mojopad just added a local MCP server. Among the uses that means if you use local AI such as Claude Cowork and you install both the Devonthink MCP and the MojoPad MCP, you can write a very simple prompt to convert a Devonthink Group or other selected documents into a Wiki complete with internal hyperlinks. This is great for organizing/searching and also for adding your own notes.

I’m a fan of MojoPad and its developer. @rkaplan suggested an interesting use case, and I think there are likely even more creative AI-facilitated integrations among DEVONthink / Mojopad / other. E.g., the upcoming Curio 34 (in the pipeline but publicly announced) also has a very robust CLI/MCP implementation that plays well with DEVONthink.

This app looks brilliant! I’ve been exploring what’s new in the world of inifinity canvas apps (so many brilliant apps out there!) but nothing felt 100% aligned to the undefined element I was looking for. This app, however, looks like the developer plucked my vague wishes out of my head and turned it into something useable :joy:

can you both expand (and anyone else using it!) on how you’re using this alongside DT? At present my notes live in my database alongside my reference files. I’ve tried separating notes from sources before and I know I don’t like that, but there’s still a “layer” above this “siloed” view of notes and references that I’ve not quite got right. I’ve been using daily note-per-day markdown doc to try and form this “layer” above, but it’s not quite what I’m after (this is all very vague because I don’t know what it is I’m looking for. All I can really define it as is “space to play” like a blank notebook is).

I have both the DT MCP Server and MojoPad MCP Server set up with Claude Cowork/Dispatch.

I have a Claude Skill in which I define a sample format for a MojoPad wiki related to my work.

When I have a set of documents for which I want a WIki I identify the DT item link for the group containing those documents. Then I ask Claude: “Run the MojoPad Skill on X-Devonthink-ABCDE…” It creates the WIki in a temporary folder on my local desktop and then imports it into DT.

Just wondering but couldn’t the skill simply create the Wiki in DEVONthink?

I set a very firm red-line that Claude is to interact with Devonthink only through Applescript and is never to directly edit a database. I thinik instructing the LLM to create the WIki in a local folder and then import it to Devonthink is consistent with this strategy.

How else would you suggest doing this?

If you are referring to Devonthink’s internal “Wikilinks” feature - that is nice but MojoPad’s prime focus is on creating a Wiki and thus it has a good number of additional features in that regard beyond what Devonthink has. Yes, I could create a somewhat more simplified Wiki using only Devonthink capabilities. It’s not any different than why do I create .rtf documents with Word rather than Devonthink.

MCP is actually more secure than telling the AI to use AppleScript, just ensure the tool get_imported_record_path is disabled to block this.

Could you share this skill or send it via PM? I’d like to test something…

I can add you to the private GIthub repo with the skill. What email can I use that would work for you on Github?

me, too, please
