DEVONthink icon no longer showing in menu bar on MacBook running macOS 26.4 and DEVONThink 4 4.2.2

I can see the DEVONthink 4 icon in the title bar in Safari, but I no longer have a DEVONthink icon in the menubar. I use the icon in the menu bar to drag emails from Apple Mail into DEVONthink.

Any suggestions?

Though related, they aren’t the same button. One is in Safari (the browser extension), the other in the Finder, our Sorter. Check DEVONthink’s Settings > Sorter. What do you see there?

In Settings > Sorter, Appearance shows Show as Menu Extra

Oh, and the Icon radio button is checked under Menu Extra Title.

Does restarting the app fix this? Is there enough space in the menu bar available?

Restarting the app and my Mac didn’t help, and there’s plenty of room in the menu bar for the icon. Still haven’t figured it out!

Do you have more than one monitor?

No. MacBook Pro with only the built-in display.

Just asking a few (probably redundant) questions.

  • DEVONthink is indeed running when you are looking for the icon in the Menu Bar?
  • You say “plenty” of room … maybe the “notch” needs more space that you think? How many MenuBar icons are visible now? I have 18 plus a “long” date icon. I used a “defaults” setting to reduce space between icons.
  • I don’t have the reference at hand, but this “defaults” setting is run from the Terminal. Perhaps you can find via Google or someone here might know.
  • There are products in the App Store which control the MenuBar. I used to use Bartender.

I was using Thaw (a successor to Ice) but have actually reduced the number of menubar apps I’m running (13 inch Air).

I use Bartender to reduce the number of menubar icons I have. There’s a good two inches of empty menubar space to the right of my notch, but no DEVONthink menubar icon. Also, I’ve noticed the DEVONthink menubar icon does not show up in Bartender at all, nor does it show up in the menubar if I completely quit Bartender. However, as long as I choose the “Show as Dock Tab” for the Sorter setting, that Tab shows up where I tell it to!

Yes, DEVONthink IS running when I look for the icon in the menubar. I use Bartender and have at least two inches of blank space in my menubar to the right of my notch and also use Bartender to reduce the space between icons.

What OS?

Tahoe (macOS 26.4).

  • Have you quit menubar apps to see if the Sorter icon appears?
  • Can you post a full-resolution screen capture of the menubar?

Also, I have tried quitting menubar apps to see if the DEVONthink icon appears, and it doesn’t.

Very strange and I don’t have other reports of this right now.
I would reboot in Safe Mode and see if it appears.

Hi. Haven’t tried this, but I will, and let you know. The good news is that I’m back from my travels and have confirmed that this same problem does not affect my main machine, a Mac Studio with macOS 26.4.1. So it seems the problem is with my laptop and not a more general issue.

I recently lost the Keyboard Maestro menubar item. Will not come back with toggling its visibility in KM settings, nor by rebooting, nor the 26.4 upgrade. I have no proof, but am quite convinced that this has to do with Bartender 6. Previously I had lost the menu item for popCalendar, but it came back after a reboot. And yes, I’ve checked whether there is anything in Bartender’s “hidden items”. In the early days, Bartender was a “just works”, low profile affair. Now it’s doing some heroic stuff under the hood. Not sure if that’s a consequence of new macOS behaviour. I tried alternatives, but they were not satisfying.

Like BLUEFROG, I have used Thaw (and still do). I preservered for a long time time with Bartender but, in my experience, it is dreadful under Tahoe so I have given up. Thaw won’t (yet) do all that Bartender (sometimes successfully) does but at least the basic functions work all the time without bringing my Mac to its knees.
