April we released DEVONthink 4.0 for Mac as public beta with the official release of DEVONthink 4.0 Copernicus in June. And if you follow us on Mastodon or Bluesky, you’ll not at all be surprised that there’s also an upgrade coming to DEVONthink’s iPad and iPhone counterpart, DEVONthink To Go.
The new generation brings countless new features in a modernized user interface, ready for iOS 26 and Liquid Glass. Use generative AI all throughout the app and organize your data with customizable smart groups. Choose your preferred AI provider and model, remote or local. While you’re working, DEVONthink To Go saves multiple versions of your documents so that you can return to them if necessary. Revision-safe databases make sure that files that shouldn’t be changed cannot be changed, and custom metadata fields let you enrich your documents with all additional data you might need for your work. All these features work, of course, seamlessly with DEVONthink 4.0 for Mac. And the list does, of course, not end here.
Today we’re starting the official beta of DEVONthink To Go 4.0. It’s feature-complete but there are, as you can guess, known — and yet-unknown — issues that we’re going to fix for the final release. To accommodate the more substantial changes for Apple’s latest operating systems, it requires iPadOS 26 or iOS 26, both already available as public betas here.
Disclaimer: Beta software can and will have bugs and glitches. We do our best to not publish beta versions that could harm your data but strongly advise you to keep recent backups of your data while working with beta software.
Hopefully there will be a version without generative AI, to match the desktop DEVONthink Standard Edition? Somehow only having a feature on DTTG is more annoying than not having it at all, e.g. OCR.
We second your concern. Therefore, gen AI will only be enabled when you intentionally add an API key. You can remove (or not add) the Chat button to the toolbar.
Apologies if its politically incorrect to ask, but will DTTG 4 be offered as a one-time payment as is DTTG 3, or will it be subscription only? I would prefer to know before DTTG 3 is removed from the App Store.
Welcome @nirmanakaya and thanks for the kind words!
We don’t have a specific comment on the pricing at this time. Information will become available as things are finalized. However, I’m not sure what bearing it has on DEVONthink To Go 3.
I can purchase outright now DTTG 3 and use that going forward for a period of time, once that is removed from the App Store I would potentially be locked into a subscription or not using it on a mobile device.
As @BLUEFROG has pointed out, things are not final yet. However, I’d advise against a one-time purchase at this time and recommend the monthly subscription instead for the moment. We will publish more detailed information on the licensing model closer to the release.
I’m not sure why you’re concerned about the timing “before DTTG3 is removed”. It wouldn’t make much sense to anyone if we removed version 3 with no official word about licensing of version 4. If you want to use version 3 now, get a monthly subscription as recommended, and keep your eye on our announcements.
Thanks, its because I don’t want to lock into a long-term subscription. If the only option is a subscription, I won’t use it. I would prefer a one-time reasonable fixed price for the version as per v3. If v4 is subscription only without a one-time payment option, I won’t use it because I can’t afford the long term subscriptions, and I would keep using v 3 until it breaks. The pricing model on the Mac version of the software is fair, if it were subscription only, I also would reluctantly move away from it.
There’s a one-time payment option. If there is no one time payment option, the only option should one want to use the iOS app it long term is a recurring subscription for the term of the app, which is what I seek to avoid.
