So, you’re saying you’re already using the beta version to test out stuff, and that the new features will be written about in your next book coming out this year??!!
Reading through the thread I noticed this:
If anyone else misses that functionality in DEVONthink’s markdown editor, let me introduce you to Brett Terpstra’s Markdown Service Tools. I don’t use most of them, but I use Links - New Link
all the time in DT. It’s not as buttery smooth as a built-in command, but it works very well.
Since we are discussing the future, here is my suggestion (request)
Having the option to see two documents side by side would be a game-changer (see Scrivener as an example). I know that DT has a script for that, but I am sorry to say it is not the same. This request seems quite old, as I have seen it in this forum many times.
Thank you for the suggestion, this is already on our to-do list for future releases but it won’t be v4.0 as our internal roadmap and schedule for this version is basically fixed, I’m sorry.
At the risk of being pedantic, you can already do this. While not contained in a single DTP window, the result is the same. I use this all the time to compare notes or refer to one document while working on another.
Highlight the two documents, then double-click on one of them to open in new windows. This works with more than two docs as well. When they open, either use the new macOS windowing feature or set them however you’d like (assuming side-by-side). It’s not as organized or “self-contained” as side-by-side in the same window, but I find this easier to use, personally. The documents will even remember their position, so the next time you open them, they’re already side-by-side.
@RobH Basically, you’re absolutely right. I also always open documents in new windows and place them next to each other or wherever. With the next DT version, you can even reduce the minimum width. Then it will work even better with more windows. Thanks again, Christian
However, one problem remains. DT unfortunately does not have a feature to make the windows float above all others so that they are not covered by windows of other apps. You can use additional software for this, but it never works as well as a “native” solution. It is only perfect if an app can make its own windows float. I would very much welcome it if this were implemented at some point.
Thank you. I tried, but the work did not flow well. Maybe because I am used to Scrivener’s convenient layout when writing.
@cgrunenberg Great to know that the request in the to-do list.
I look forward to “Take Control of DEVONthink 4” almost as much as I look forward to DEVONthink 4 itself!
