Has there ever been consideration into being able to open specific databases in specific windows so that ALL databases currently open are not visible/open in ALL separate windows? I feel this would really help me focus on specific tasks sometimes.
Not sure I understand exactly what youâre saying. I have several databases open, but only a couple of windows open, sometimes for the same database, sometimes for different databases.
So I may have, for example, an âemailâ database open, an âadminâ database open, and a specific project database open. I would like to have one window open in which ONLY my email database is open. And another window in which ONLY My project database is open. Currently, all windows show all databases. In the scenario Iâm suggesting, a window would be more like a âworkspaceâ dedicated to specific databases, regardless of which databases are open in other windows/workspaces.
What I do ⌠in Navigation Sidebar, right-click select the database, pick âNew Window. Do that for all the databases you want in a ânew windowâ.
If you prefer, you can close the Navigation Sidebar (Menu: Sidebar View ), to make it clear you have only one database in the view.
This what you are looking for?
No, not really. If you run a search, it will still search across all open databases by default, and restricting searches to specific databases (plural) is not straightforward. Iâd still like to be able to navigate between more than one database in the sidebar (specific to my workspace) and access favourites, etc. I would just like windows/workspaces to be siloed to one or more specific databases.
(Thanks all for engaging on this nonetheless.)
Oh. New requirement, I guess. MeâIâm not bothered with taking a step to pick where the searches should be initiated from, so I donât have any suggestions from my bag of tricks.
Still not quite âsiloedâ to the extent I might like it to be but this is certainly closer to what I have in mind @BLUEFROG, thank you!

If youâre working in one window, choose Go > Next(Previous) Database to quickly switch between your open databases. Alternately, press Option-Command-E or R.
I somehow missed the nuance that doing this,
to switch between databases when you have a search entered is a good way to isolate your search results per database and quickly rotate through open databases to see what might be where. I was using this shortcut (in the rare times I remembered it was there) to bounce back and forth between two projects when the day required it. Not enough to burn it into muscle memory though.
I am going to give it a try hiding the active sidebar and see if I can just cycle through the open databases when I need to switch. Very cool.
@jsmith I donât know how large your databases are. But I know from this forum that there are many users with only one very large database that works perfectly.
There may be advantages to having multiple databases. But for me at least, the advantages of having only one (large) database outweigh the disadvantages. I think everything you want to do works better with just one database.
I always have at least five windows open. Different groups, tags, my inbox⌠but only my main window is visible. All the others are minimized. Theyâre not in the way, but always there when I need them.
