Different Metadata for Different files

I am slowly getting to grips with DT4 and a great programme it is too. I keep discovering things that help (and sometimes hinder) my needs. One such thing is using metadata to search or for use in smart rules and sorting etc.

I am using DT4 for (amongst other things) keeping track of my wood turning hobby. As such I have MD files created from a template with all the data for the finished items - whether it’s for sale, how it was made, what wood etc. This file references another MD file, again from a template, to detail the wood blank used to create the finished piece, which in turn references another MD file, again from a template, detailing where I got the Raw wood from and how much it cost. The ability to link these documents together has been a revelation to me and is really helping keep things in order.

My question: is it possible to have different Custom metadata fields for different files?

The finished piece has a selection metadata called Status - Sold/for sale/gifted etc. The blank doesn’t need this data but would benefit from fields such as in storage/Used/destroyed etc.

I can reveal or hide custom data globally, can I do this it for different templates? Or can I have a different set of selection criteria in the Status field for different templates.

I get that I can use tags, and in truth, tags are probably the way forward. I’m just trying to keep the number of tags I use to a reasonable number.

Thanks

Custom metadata is currently global, a future release will support database-specific setups.

Thank you @cgrunenberg. I can see a lot of great uses for this feature - I’ll look forward to the next update. Meanwhile, it looks like tags are the way…

To be clear: the comment was “a future release”, not “the next update”. Those could be two very different things.
