- What the heck is Grid View?!?
I only really use it for one thing, which is to display a cheat gallery of student mugshots with names that I can peek at in class while pretending Iâm glancing at important notes. But itâs great for that.
LOL - good to know your opponent
I just searched for grid
in the documentation and couldnât find anything, do you mean this?
If so, yes, for images only.
They were asking about DT To Go. Youâre looking at the desktop version.
Ahaha oops!
I do but only for one specific database, which contains PDF books. Itâs literally just so I can scroll by book cover instead of file name.
When I looked into what it was, got a little bit scared off by the only setting related to it that I saw: Always open in grid view.
Persisted anyway because Iâm courageous like that and see that I am unlikely to use it because it takes up a lot of space on my phone.
Oh, youâve made a good point re which device you use! I want to amend my answer to say Iâm talking about on iPad. I donât use that database on iPhone and if I did I donât know that Iâd like the grid view on the smaller screen!
I donât use it. On phone I use only Journal and Notes databases. With grid view the file names are cut off. So I donât get a much idea about the file on a quick glance. I am used to list view.
What I want to know is, how the heck do I turn it off? I tapped the âalwaysâ option somewhere without realizing it was a lifetime commitment â and itâs a pretty useless view for me.
See page 19 of the 3.8.7 version of the âDEVONthink ToGo Manualâ.
I use grid view and absolutely love it. Itâs especially valuable for PDFâs having color-coded annotations and the color-coded annotation icons (stars, arrows, etc). Itâs really useful to be able to zoom out like that and fly around the document. Itâs also helpful as a presentation tool. Iâm actually planning to use it as one of my presentation tools in my videos.
I havenât been able to find grid view on desktop though. I was in the middle of a zoom meeting, showing someone my research, and I wanted to pop open grid view so I could convey the high-level illustration of my analysis, but I couldnât find grid view.
There is no Grid View in DEVONthink. There is View > as Icons however.
The Grid view discussed here is a grid of the items in your databases, not the contents of an item. Long-press any group and choose Open as Grid to see for yourself.
It sounds like you are talking about the âThumbnailsâ view for PDFs, which shows a grid of page thumbnails like this:
Maybe this should be split into a new topic, but let me offer some suggestions.
DEVONthink To Go and DEVONthink 3 on macOS use different software frameworks to display PDF files. As far as I know, there is no direct equivalent of the page thumbnails view in DEVONthink 3 on the mac. I think itâs more common for people to miss the Annotations Inspector from the mac in DEVONthink To Go. Have you tried using that?
I donât really see how the page thumbnail grid is useful for presentations â most normal text is too small to read â but I guess it depends on the document. A PDF can be many things, after all.
Here are some approximations. In DEVONthink 3 you can:
-
Set your PDF Display to Two Pages and Continuous Scroll (Found in the menu under View > PDF Display). If you zoom out, you can see several pages at once.
-
Use the Thumbnails Inspector. When you resize the inspector pane, the thumbnails grow. But only up to a certain size â after that, the spacing between them just increases. The most I can get is 3 columns and this size:
Note: You may need to resize the window. Apparently, the max width of the Inspector is 50% of a document window. I never noticed before. In the main DEVONthink window, the inspector can be wider than the view pane.
But the closest is probably using the âContact Sheetâ view option in the default macOS app Preview. Open a PDF in Preview and choose View > Contact Sheet. You can make the thumbnails bigger/smaller by zooming. Again there is a limit, but it is bigger than in DT3s Thumbnails inspector.
PDF Expert has a similar view (View > Thumbnails), but doesnât let you resize the thumbnails.
