Double-Click Behavior Modifiers

When I double-click on a file, the default behavior is to open the document in a new window in DT.

I realize there is a setting so that double-click opens the document in an external editor.

Having this be all-or-none behavior makes building muscle memory for a double-click workflow difficult. Regardless which I choose, sometimes I can double click and sometimes I have to use a completely different means to open a document. (Like Cmd-Shift-O)

Would you consider adding the use of modifier keys with double-click to change behavior for a particular double-click?

This would be similar to how Safari provides options for default behavior when clicking a link, but provides the use of modifiers when a link is clicked.

Also, there may already be a way to do this that I have not discovered. I am still using DT3.

Thanks for the suggestion, noted.

You can do this and 1000 other things with BetterTouchTool (BTT).

Very easy to set up: Double-click in the gray field. Then you can select the modifier you want. You can even choose the left or the right modifier.

Reading the DT4 Beta 2 guide, it looks what I requested has been added to DT4:

Double-click opens documents externally:
Open double-clicked documents externally in the system default application, e.g., TextEdit for RTF documents. If disabled, they will be opened and displayed in a separate document window. If you hold the ⌘ Command key, the document will open in the opposite way of this setting.

Thank you DT dev team!

And thanks for the pointer to a general solution for any app @FrankT.
