Double tapping space bar freezes DTTG

I have keyboard options on iPad and iPhone set to use the “.” Shortcut so that double-tapping the space bar inserts a full stop followed by a space. This works in all other apps, but in DTTG, it freezes the app, which I have to kill. When I start it up again, I find I’ve lost all my edits. It’s difficult being careful not to double tap space when it’s so convenient, and I’m used to it in other apps.

Is this a bug in DTTG or do I need to set something else for it to work?

The default onscreen keyboard on both iPad and iPhone.
