Similar problem in DT3b3: when selecting items in list view, they frequently don’t display in the item display pane.

Same here, only since DT3b4 it seems.
What kind of items did you select? Does the database contain feeds?
Are these PDFs you’re choosing then choosing other PDFs or file types?
No, I’ve noticed it primarily with emails.
The next release will fix this.
