OK. Just bought version 4 (a year of) and in the link (“If you haven’t downloaded DEVONthink Pro 4 and installed it yet, click here”) it gives me a link to a dmg of version 4.0beta1.
So where is the final version 4 release?
And what do I do with the old version “DEVONthink 3” ?

I don’t know where you got this idea but the announcement clearly states this is a beta, not the final release.
And you don’t do anything with the old version at this time.

I think I got the idea from the email proudly announcing " DEVONthink 4 is Here". I didn’t read the small print and assumed it was the actual new version. Great.
So the two (3 and beta 4) run concurrently? Until the “real” 4 release? Oder?
There are a ton of explanations now, here and online, explaining the details of the beta. No need to repeat them endlessly.
The search function helps to find the relevant information.
I’m completely confused as well. I paid for the version 4 updated and clicked the associated download. The installer says drag the “Devonthink.app” to Applications. Before doing this, I would like to know whether this is the beta or not. When I paid, there was no indication that Version 4 isn’t actually available. Is there any harm, in telling me what is going on?
It’s an easy mistake to make, as I did, not reading the small print, but if you open the dmg and do a ‘get info’ on the app, you’ll see it’s a beta.
I don’t even know if double-clicking databases will open in version 3 or the paid beta 4. I suppose we could use “the search function” but you wouldn’t have thought there was any harm in people being more helpful and just answering, considering you’ve just shelled out the money, but here we are.
I responded to the newsletter that was sent to men that sent me to various places. I paid for the upgrade but version 4 is not showing at my Profile just now.
I take it that you are selling version 4 with only the beta available right now and I was too stupid to figure this out.

Just pointing out the information about it being a beta release is there, even if just at the download page.

How often? I don’t think there’s harm either in people reading what is freely available. The forum is full of posts and information about the beta since at least two days.
I just went on the splash email sent to me. Yes I did make the mistake of thinking it was the final 4 version — easily done, as at least one other here has found out. It would be more straightforward if licences were only sold for non-beta release versions.
We actually have had many people want to buy the upgrade as soon as the public beta was available, mostly to support and encourage development.
What, before or after trying it?
Before, as in “Hey! The beta is available! Here’s some money. Keep up the great work!”

Not quite. A pig in a poke is purchasing something sight unseen typically involving a completely unknown entity. That is not this. These people are graciously investing in DEVONthink 4 (and DEVONtech as a company), with no cajoling and begging on our part. And we are immensely grateful and appreciative of their generosity.
I’ve been using DEVONthink for a number of years and have found the company excellent in all ways. I went ahead and paid for the beta as I’m extremely confident in their work and wanted to show my appreciation.
I agree with your assessment. I would add that the amount I paid for Version 4 (albeit a beta) is very much on the low side, given how incredibly useful it will likely be for me. I will wait to install V4 until the DEVONthink developers decide they have a reliable version for an official release.
I’ve upgraded too. I knew it was a beta version, but I uninstalled Devonthink 3. Am I in trouble for doing that? Beta version is working perfectly.
