Jim, it seems that the pressure to release DT 4.0 was successful!
:). That’s an fantastic upgrade. Thank you so much. I’m looking forward to testing it in the coming weeks.
On behalf of a very tired team (who still has work to do after we catch our collective breath), thank you for the encouragement!
Yes, I see what I misunderstood. While on the old DT3 pricing model, I did purchase a total of (4) seats (Home/Work * Desktop/Laptop), but my original license is not within the 1-year frame; only the additional seats.
In reading the FAQ at about not having to extend additional seats, then if the single extension price brings all 4 devices up to DT4 that seems fair to me. Thanks!
You’re welcome.
When I do this I dont get an extend button…but there is an Activate button.
There doesn’t appear to be any way for me to purchase v4
Very good news - I understand that there is still work to do before proper release but congratulations for the next written chapter
I will update my license every year so this question is really not for me but I can still ask it.I see it answered but want to make sure I understand it. If I understand it correctly, if opting not to renew the license after a year or two of updating it and a specific bug for features you have payed for appear, will that user get patches with fixes or have the patch-train left the station in that specific case?
Many thanks for the app that changed my digital life,
Pontus.
I saw some great news about this update.
Before asking I’ll go deeper in the functionalities.
I check my license and I see this
Am I so unlucky that the 1 year deadline expired a few days ago ?
Is the “activate” button broken (at least for me)?
Upgraded my 2 seats yesterday to version 4 - though I don’t want to join the beta. If I klick the activate button In the license window Safari shows an invalid link error.
Yes, the Activate button has issues caused by our new website. We’re already investigating. In the meantime you can just enter your license manually. Sorry for the inconveniences.
All licenses purchased one year ago and earlier show this date: Yesterday. You might receive more maintenance updates for your DEVONthink 3 license but no free upgrade to version 4 unless you purchased within one year before yesterday.
I’m not that against your pricing.
But it is unfair to compare DEVONthink with Netflix, Spotify, etc. Do you know how much money they invest every year to provide content?
And of course they have a lot more customers than we do.
Someone suggested an answer on this on MPU, but just to check here - is it possible to restrict which databases use AI on a per database basis?
Someone there had said it wasn’t, which would be a killer for me since I have personal and special category data related to members of the public in one database that aren’t suitable for use with an AI.
One of the reasons I love DT is because i can select how databases sync on a per database basis, so I just have this one database not sync via cloud services and avoid having to create a DPIA for it. So its really privacy friendly.
Id hope that we can restrict the use of AI with specific databases.
One option is to disable the database search in Settings > AI > Chat. In that case the chat assistant is only able to use the currently selected items in the item list (e.g. List view).
But even if it’s enabled, the database search is still restricted to the selected items or, if there aren’t any, to the sidebar selection.
Closing databases is another option but a little cumbersome. And using a local chat engine via e.g. Ollama is also possible.
That’s why i’m not against your pricing. I do prefer one time purchase for a major update, with of course a higher price. I just don’t like the model.
I understand I get all new versions for one year from the date of purchase. If I don’t then purchase a new licence, you can continue to use the software in its current version.
I also have the option of suspending the renewal for one or more years and then purchasing an extension again.
My question now is: How much will the renewal price be then? Will it be higher than the annual renewal?
The renewal is always manual (no subscription) and will cost the same, regardless how long you don’t renew. However, there will be a small incentive when you renew in time.
Does this mean that the AI won’t do global indexing of all documents in a database as you add them, for later queries?
