Thanks for the nice feedback! What kind of rough edges did you actually experience?
just chiming in here: what a great update! call me adventurous, but I immediately made DT4 my new production software and have not regretted it - the feature additions are between well thought out and spectacular..:-)…
obviously everything AI, but also the versioning and the additional (additional to benoit’s script) graph view - I am as excited as I am looking forward to finding out how these will improve and simplify my workflows!
some things don’t work as expected yet (eg. natural language in search, generation of images or transcription of audios), but these are very likely me not yet having RTFM, but just playing around with the new functionality..:-).
also as I am running a local LLM, I can immediately say when it is being queried as the fans spin up almost momentarily, which they currently do at unexpected times - so much new stuff to learn, so much new functionality to incorporate and improve with - lots of thanks to the entire team for this great update!
And you have your local backups running, correct?
PS: Read the Getting Started > AI Explained section.
every four hours..
and I have read the AI part, just need to dig deeper into some of the specifics..
Even just a daily backup makes me happy, so good on ya
And thanks for reading it. It’s an important topic for people to understand.
Thats a funny way of looking at it. Though investment money goes towards the cost of a product of course, whether the purchase price makes sense to you should be based on the value you derive from it. The cost of a cup of coffee is very little, yet it is priced north of 5 bucks and it sells for that price so folks must be perceived as deriving ample value from that 5 bucks spent.
Just saying…
Very minor ones — mostly related to my having to re-tweak a few settings from DT3 (as intimated in my other posts) when transferring over to DT4.
I’ve also noticed that my custom scripts I had installed for DT3 did not make the transfer over to DT4, but this is actually less of an issue — given how I haven’t used those since the early days of DT3 (and TBH, I had forgotten what many of them did — obviously needed them back in the day, for whatever specific task at hand then).
That pesky red update/upgrade button continues to make an appearance, at random times, despite the new license being activated.
And over the last few days, have had a few crashes — which is new. Shout if I should send a log/crash report somewhere.
Hold the Option key and choose Help > Report bug to start a support ticket.
I also have the red button on DTP3 (latest). Probably because I already purchased the upgrade?
You should not have both DEVONthink 3 and 4 running on the same account on the same Mac.
If you hadn’t read this yet…
I don’t I just bought the license upgrade
Does the button appear only DEVONthink 3 and/or in DEVONthink 4 too?
I don’t have v4 beta installed as I only purchased it to support the development and would like to wait till v4.0 is out
Thanks for the details! In that case it’s probably both caused by the initial server issues, we’ll check this.
Thank you, that is highly appreciated! I can imagine that it might have been some busy days for you and your team. As a customer I feel grateful that you both take your time to reply – in many cases thoroughly – to questions and overboarding discussions and at the same time find/take time to fix issues. I mean, it’s still a beta after all…
Thanks for the nice feedback! Unfortunately not as much time to fix issues as I would like but that’s not unusual after a major release.
I also got the red button in DEVONthink 3 on my personal Mac, which has not had DEVONthink 4 on it.
I haven’t seen the red button on my work Mac, which does have DEVONthink 4 on it.
(Maybe it’s something as simple as a boolean being accidentally negated?)
The trouble with that is it affects every application. They currently work well with the resolution I have on both my large screen and laptop, so changing the resolution just for DT4 is not an optimal solution.
I get where you are coming from. I miss the days where it was the dominant practice to purchase physical game cartridges or software CDs, and things didn’t change that much all that quickly. But here’s my take as a longtime DT user.
DT3 was one of the best all-time values in software I have ever received. The DT team provided a heroic level of support for over 6 years and many of the improvements were in response to user feedback on this forum. Some of the DT3 updates were so thorough and responsive that by DT3.5 it already seemed like we were using a DT4 even though the interface visually had not changed all that much. If you look back at the release notes and do a deep dive on the comments on this forum it will confirm what I am saying here.
With that in mind, as much as I also begrudge subscription or update pricing, this product is totally worth it. And you’re not really buying the product with the renewals, you’re buying the team. This team is totally worth it.
This pricing model is thought out well and, in my opinion, justified based on how this software is developed and supported. I do not make that as a categorical statement. The DT team is a rare gem and they are worth your currency of choice.
@BLUEFROG or anyone else can attest that I am in no way affiliated with the company and offer this testimonial free and clear of any reward or benefit
DT is the main tool to manage my research and it has never let me down.
Congrats to @BLUEFROG @cgrunenberg @eboehnisch on yet another fantastic version of an already exceptional product.
