DT4 - import settings from DT3?

Hi there…

The pinned post in the forum says, DT4 will import the DT3 settings if I archive/delete the DT3.app.

I have launched DT4 before doing that, so I guess it had created it’s own setting files without importing the DT3 ones.

Is there a way to import my old settings into DT4 at this point?

Thanks,
Jens

The preferences are not shared between DEVONthink 3 and 4, so no this doesn’t happen at this point.

Ok, I figured it out.
I have copied ~/Library/Preferences/com.devon-technologies.think3.plist over com.devon-technologies.think.plist in the same folder.
Seems to work fine, I hope I havn’t broken anything.

Clarify what you’re referring to here. Are you saying you copied the contents of the old .plist and pasted into the new .plist?

  1. I renamed com.devon-technologies.think.plist to com.devon-technologies.think.plist.bak
  2. I’ve duplicated com.devon-technologies.think3.plist
  3. I renamed com.devon-technologies.think3 Copy.plist to com.devon-technologies.think.plist

While it may not have had any apparent ill effect, that isn’t something we are recommending.

Maybe you could provide a function to export/import settings in the future.
I’t would be helpful to transfer your preferences between installations, too, and also as a backup before fiddling with different options.

The most important settings are migrated, e.g. sync, imprinter configurations or label colors. But as the bundle identifier and application name will not be changed anymore, this is the last migration of this kind anyway.

Could we delete the com.devon-technologies.think.plist file, and then re-open DT4?

This didn’t happen in my case. Maybe because the DT3.app was not archived/removed?

That’s not required for the migration. What exactly was not migrated? E.g. custom metadata settings aren’t due to a bug.

Only the Global Inbox database seems to have been migrated, while all settings were ignored.

Your sync locations should have migrated as well. Are you saying they didn’t?

Yes. DT4 came basically with “fresh” settings. No sync locations either. This is the reason I copied the .plist over.

DT4 Server seemed to import most of my settings, but the Server settings did not come over. Had to re-enable start on launch, change the Bonjour name, and recreate users and permissions.

Welcome @mboszko
That is correct. The Server settings are in the main application’s preferences which aren’t migrated between 3 and 4.
