DT4 - "more flexible and modern license model"?

Ok, thank you very much

Just a stupid question: AI features are bundled with DT4 or I need an API subscription from ChatGPT, Claude etc.?

How much would the license be if every supported AI service would be bundled with DT4?

Thank you very much for this nice and helpful reply.

Not a stupid question at all. However, it is already covered in the Getting Started > AI Explained section of the help.

Thanks. There’s a non-inapp section on the website or forum where I can check without the need to update from DT3 to 4?

You can download the manual.

How about a price for a lifetime of DT upgrades? I’m 75, so you wouldn’t lose too much money on me if you keep it cheap!

I’ve seen a number of prices cited scrolling through this very long thread, but it’s not clear whether they are just examples to explain the new pricing model or the actual prices.

Is there an official page that lists the upgrade prices for the new model?

Knowing the actual upgrade prices would be very helpful in planning for how to approach the new license model.

Thank you for the link to this item. Exactly what I was looking for and very helpful.

I purchased DT3 last November and so get free updates until this coming November, so it looks like my account page won’t show the extension pricing until then.

Nice to have the pricing info now.

You must have missed Catalina, or weren’t using any 32-bit applications at the time.

FWIW, my approach to other software that uses this model is that I don’t upgrade until I “need” to. Which might be because there’s been a Mac OS change that renders the old version obsolete, or because there are new features that I want.

For software that I use often, like DT, that might mean annual updates. For software that I use rarely, like Curio or Tinderbox, it might only be once every few years.

It’s not “just like” a subscription model, for two very important reasons:

  • It doesn’t auto-renew. My credit card only gets charged when I decide to charge it, which means I don’t pay anything unless I’m actually using the software.
  • My data is mine. Letting my upgrade lapse doesn’t cut me off from my data.

Yes, I’d forgotten and @brookter reminded me of that change up thread

Very interesting debate.
I didn’t think my initial question would provoke so many reactions.
Thanks to the DVT team for trying to answer it all.

While I now understand your licensing model better (without accepting it), I still haven’t received an answer to my question about the price to pay:
6 times more expensive than before in my case!
I would have understood 2 or 3 times. But this seems really exaggerated.

Once again, DVT is a good product, with excellent support, so I may continue, but …

May I ask: why 6 times? Or do you mean „up to 6 times“? (Btw I am curious about the same question regarding bread)

The long upgrade cycles in the past were never planned that way actually. And as already mentioned, we do promotions every then and now. Finally, if you’re happy with DEVONthink, meaning it’s reliable and does everything that you need, then there’s no reason to update every year.
