DT4 Print dialogue PDF to DT - a question re: URL

Hi,

when I use the print dialogue that can directly print to DT4, I usually want the URL of the webpage I am thus saving to my DT data base in order to have a documented source for the information.
Is there a way to automate that? Or do I have to do this manually?

Grateful for any hints!

What app are you printing out of?

Where are you printing from?

When I print from Safari, DEVONthink always grabs the URL and saves it in the URL property field.

I just tried printing from Firefox and chose ā€œPrint using the system dialogā€ so I could use the DEVONthink PDF service. I had a vague memory Firefox didn’t pass the URL – but it did.

(I’m still on DT3, but I don’t expect DT4 to be any different.)

Otherwise there is usually an option for the print layout to include a page header and/or footer, which should include the URL.

Agreed. I am seeing no issue printing from Safari, Firefox, and Orion.

I print from Safari. Here is a screenshot of a page I just tried to save to DT4 via the print dialogue. As is clearly visible, the URL field is empty.
Since others don’t seem to have the problem: where can my problem lie?
Many thanks for your help!

  • What’s the URL of that specific page you clipped?
  • What OS are you running?

The URL is

The OS is macOS 15.5

Printed to PDF with the URL from Safari.
Also, clipped with our browser extension with no issue.

Hmm. No issue here.

Ok - Iā€˜ll restart everything and wait whether that solves the problem
Many thanks!

Good idea, especially if you haven’t rebooted in awhile.

Iā€˜ll report back!

Re-starting did not change anything.

But I found a difference when entering tags in the pop-up after the print dialogue:

  • if I enter tags for the entry to be saved, I get no URL
  • if I don’t enter tags, I get a URL in the field.

Can anyone reproduce that?
Thanks!

So using our browser extension?

No, using the print dialogue and the option to ā€œSave pdf to DEVONthinkā€¦ā€

Post a screen capture where you’re adding the tags, please.

Here it is - but strangely now it seems to have worked… But you can see on the first screenshot I posted (start of this thread) that the URL is missing.

(Edit: sorry, not first post but first reply to your answer.)

Here is the screenshot:

Whatever the reason was - now it seems to work. Fingers crossed this may continue… (Strange… But many thanks, @bluefrog, for your help!).

Strange indeed! That’s where I added tags as well and saw no issue.

And you’re welcome
