DTP4 and bookends.

Well, I just switched over to DTP4. It seems my DTP3 pdf’s weren’t bringing in full summaries so I’ve just got pdf’s with the standard bookends author/year and a title…. Now I’ve done an import from bookends in DTP4 and it imported a whole new set of records (with metadata) but it’s not synced to my pdfs that were already in my database. Is there a way to match them by name (DTP4) to tiltle (DTP3) so that the pdfs become an attachment to their corresponding summaries? It seems dtp3 didn’t even give a bookends url, so we’re out of luck on even that….

Welcome @mkapes
DEVONthink 3 and 4 don’t use the same codebase for Bookends importing. Version 4 has been modified to support improvements in Bookends scripting abilities.

so that the pdfs become an attachment to their corresponding summaries?

To what corresponding summaries? Are you also indexing the Bookends attachments? Please clarify the situation.

Sorry, I’m a new DT user…. Import from Bookends seems to import the summary, but not the pdf of all Bookends records…

so I’ve got a folder called bookends of all the bookends summaries of all the articles in my database. There’s also an older folder, also called Bookends (both automatically named), which is a legacy from dtp3 that contains the pdf’s of those Bookends references that had attachments at the the time of running the older Import from Bookends script. It imported pdfs to DTP3 and deleted the attachments in Bookends….

I’d like to attach the pdfs to their corresponding summaries, and moving forward, also import the pdfs of new references, keeping Bookends for just citation management (I’m neutral on whether the pdfs would also have a copy in Bookends). Hopefully, this at least starts to clarify the situation.

No worries!
Import from Bookends does not import the PDF documents nor does it delete anything from Bookends. It creates rich text summaries from option you chose in the import dialog.

What’s the proper way to import the pdfs from bookends then…. and what’s the right way to link those pdfs to the summaries?
