Concur. In my case, the issue affected dozens of files across several databases. Not the sort of thing I would have failed to notice!
Personally Iām sticking with DTTG2 and DT Mac exclusively until this is resolved. I still have DTTG3 installed, but am only using it with disposable ātestā data.
I am quite disappointed (and dumbfounded) that the only notice about potentially permanent data destruction from Devon Technologies is a tweet most users will never see.
Honestly, Iām stunned there hasnāt been a notice about it in these forums, on the website/blog, notification in the apps, etc. I know there is very little end users can actually do at this point, but the one thing they can do to (likely) prevent widespread damage is stop using DTTG.
However, DT is reluctant to issue that warning, for some reason.
Credits go to @Blanc
Thatās kind of you; the way I see it, weāre all in the same boat and working together - Iām not looking for credit and will continue to help any way I can - as you are all doing (thank you all btw - unemotional, intelligent and focussed is the way I would describe whatās going on here, thatās just whatās needed. I feel bad for DT and anybody who has lost data; letās continue to provide what support we can to help resolve the issue).
When exactly did you get these errors?
This was a few days ago ⦠I donāt think it was when I first synchronized my newly installed copy of DTTG3, because I would have mentioned it in my original problem report. So it would have been when I reinstalled and re-synchronized. That is, the error message may have occurred after the datastore was already damaged.
Looking back at the support ticket history (ticket 987376) yes, thatās correct. The error message occurred during my troubleshooting, not concurrently with the original problem.
On my dtg3 mac I have 79 0 size files. While I can see the pdf image I cannot access it.
I have many other zero size as well such as jpg doc all types
I myself understand that this is a delicate issue. I love DT and appreciate the great work of this company/developers. They are communicating openly and transparently here in this thread⦠maybe a pinned official communication with regular updates at the top of the DTTG forum might be a good way to deal with such a situation + regular twitter updates and a blog posting.
John, Iām sorry to hear that. Can you provide more details? Are you syncing DT3 on your Mac to DTTG3? Is there anything which seems to link the files? Special characters in the names, age of the file, location, anythingā¦? Out of interest, does the modification date suggest anything helpful, or is it still the (presumed) original date?
Experiencing this problem too - 29 zeroed files. mostly PDFs but also 3 webarchives which seems different (and a couple of md files but they might just be empty). Files affected include both files in teh databse and indexed files.
I was using DT3 and DTTG3 - icloud legacy sync.
I wonāt open DTTG3 for a while now i guess. I have backups at least so itās not as bad as it could be.
Iām now getting a message on DTTG (but not on DT3 on my Mac) that a certain database has failed verification, requesting me to repair it. I do not see how to do this in the app. Iāve cleared the āghostedā files.
Thanks for the new āghostsā smart group, guys. It revealed 278 corrupted files for me (some .docx & .pages, mostly PDF). They were imported to DTTG 2 on a mobile device over the last two years. Although I cannot be sure for every single PDF I think I put the files into the database by just copying them into the DevonThink folder of the Files App, not using the share sheet. At least I couldnāt identify any regularly clipped file in the ghost list, yet. Maybe there is a connection?
Also: It seems to be consolidated by now that the corruption is definitely a synchronisation problem. After a first trial with a handful of them I can presumably still access all of the sync-corrupted PDFs on the device they were uploaded from as I already stated in another post.
Did you empty trash? Should work after emptying it
A nightmare for everyone involved, thanks to the team for the extra hours you put in working on this.
DTTG3 finds a small number of ghosts in a few of my databases (mostly .M4A in my case), but when I check the databases on the Mac, the files are intact. I also have backups, but for now Iām mostly concerned with avoiding propagating the bad files and/or possible confusion arising from handling this issue manually.
Other than not syncing, whatās the appropriate course of action going forward?
Hi, could you please let me know how to create such a smart group? Iām unfamiliar with it, tried it out but for one reason or another I only end up with smart groups for one database. Also they donāt show the 0-byte files in my database (which I do have now, unfortunately)
Developers,
Could you please, in detail, put up a notice on how to safely proceed from this point on? Iām starting to notice a lot of empty items also, and Iām very worried. All kind of files seem to be affected, not only PDF"s. Also MPEG, HTML, etc.
Please show us, step by step, in a blog post, how to proceed. How do we create a smart group showing all the empty documents on the Mac (as a source)? Cab we safely delete the ghost files from iOS, or will we end up without those files once syncing is reinstated on all devices?
Please help us out here. Like many of us could have used some step-by-step information on how to safely upgrade to DTTG3.
Please, please, pleaseā¦
I suspect you have a database selected in the left Navigation side panel when creating this Smart Group. Put the cursor down in the Smart Groups area, then create the Smart Group. (Same thing happened to me).
Thanks a lot @rmschne!
These kind of details should be included in the post Iām looking forward toā¦
Note Search in: Databases, which you will only be able to set when setting up a global smart group (by, quoting @rmschne, āputting the cursor down in the Smart Groups area, then creating the Smart Groupā)
